I remember seeing a post a long time ago about a member who built some type of baffles that just slide down into his stacks:confused:

I tried searching for it tonight but couldn't find it. If any of you people can remember who did this or could recommend anything I would greatly apprecaite it.

I love my straight piped stacks for running around town, but I'm also on the interstate @ 70MPH 4 days a week as well as take my truck on long trips so something gonna have to be done :{

Me and a buddy had to stop for ear plugs 1 hour into my 3 hour drive home from Cynthiana Kentucky last night after I got my stacks installed.

Didn't have time to road test the noise and that really upsets me because the guys shop we were in had a resinator sitting right there on the floor that he didn't need. :rolleyes:

Mark,

I cant help you with the baffles, but you wanna ride in my rig with em right next to the doors on a reg. cab? for 900 miles?... :D no wonder my wife never listens to me anymore... :D

I'll keep this post monitored so that if some info comes along I can try it.

I used to own a muffler shop. The side pipes that were popular a couple of decades ago used a baffle inside that made them into a huge glass pack muffler. That is probably what you want.

I see you have 5 inch stacks. Two 2 1/2 inch pipes will flow about the same as a single 3 1/2 inch if I remember correctly. So, a 2 1/2 inch core in each stack shouldn't choke you down any. The more difference between the ID and OD the better the noise reduction.

You need to cut two ends for each stack. They will look like huge flat washers. They should just fit inside the stacks on the OD and just allow the core to fit into the ID. You can use any length of core you want... the longer the quieter. Drill the core full of holes like the core of a glass pack. The same design is also used in the cores of the straight through truck mufflers. Weld the ends onto the core. It will work well if you have angle cut stacks. You can just drop them inside the pipes and even take them out with a long wire hook if you leave a good size hole in each core that you can hook into. If you have turn backs, it will require taking everything apart to get them inside.

You will probably need to invent some kind of set screw to keep the cores from rattling inside the stacks. Packing like old metal screen wire between the core and the stack will also help muffle the noise. If you think this out, I think you can build something you can put in and take out as you wish.

Hope this helps. Have fun!

Steve

BAFFLES

I just seen a new baffle for truck straight pipes in a magazine. They look like auger flighting made to slip inside the straight pipe. They would be easy to build, auger flighting is cheap. PM if you want more info and address's I'll have them. The info out in the shop.

Mark:

Is it really that loud? I'm curious.

Wouldn't it be easier/cheaper to just buy a small straight-thru muffler and install it under the truck? Or you don't think that will quiet the beast enough?

I've been going back and forth on this stack thing for a couple of months now, and somebody finally bought my topper so I might have the $$ to do it. I don't have any money figured in for a muffler though, and the baffle idea doesn't appeal to me.

Hope you get something worked out.

Eric

I'm actually thinking a straight through muffler would probably help the most as far as noise out the pipes. the problem really is the drone, It gets unreal after a few hours of non stop cruising down the interstate. Especially when the turbo whine is mixed in with it... HEADACE CITY... So I think I will try the muffler first and see how that helps and then if needed try baffles. One of the two should do the trick, i dont want to do both, cause i think that would just restrict things too much

ordered 3" in/out 22" long resinator today. $71 installed won't be here till monday though :{

YES it is that loud. I have a regular cab truck, and at 70 the drone will deafen you.

I've wanted stacks for so long and I finally get them and now I may have to remove them. :{ :{ :{

Worst part is I lost a g/f over this (long story no comments please) so if they have to come back out then that was for nothing:rolleyes:

Will know Monday. Post more then.

having the stacks inside the bed really makes that much of a difference???

With my windows up,,, I can hardly tell my truck is even straight piped! There is very little noise from the "stacks", the turbo whine, and motor noise, easily over power te stacks.

Although,, with your 2500, stacks outside the bed would look a little odd :)

Get some pics up buddy, I wanna see it :)

Don't remove your stacks... If you need a resonator, I have one off of my 24V, in fact, I have the complete Muffler/resonator sitting in the yard... I think I'm too late, but the offer stands :)

Hope it turns out ok.

Good Luck!

Merrick Cummings Jr

Merrick here is a picture of my truck with stacks

It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't end right with the cab, but I still had to fit into my basement.

Yours don't resinate inside your cab because they are about 3 feet above it!;)

I was thinking about putting stacks on my 97. Did you guys buy yours in a kit or did you build it yourselfs. I think that I might know of a local shop that can bend that size of pipe. Does it matter if you have two stacks or one? I can get a 4 inch down pipe for about 100 bucks and then bend the rest of the system with a friend. He does a really good job with pipes. I would like to run them straight piped as well, is that a big deal? If someone made them themselves please let me know how you did it.

Thanks
