home heating oil

I have the option of having my tank filled with home heating oil from a new neighbor who ownes an oilCo. What would you do? :-{}

1) It will burn.



2) if DOT catches you, your fine will cover all the miles back until you can prove you bought "taxed" fuel. Major fines!



3) The oil has red dye in it. If something goes wrong with your fuel system and the dealer sees the red fuel, they can void your warrantee.



That being said, I know a Guy who has put over 300,000 miles each on 2 VW TDI jettas with home heating oil. I guess DOT never checks cars, but my luck I would be the first!

Heating oil isn't road taxed. So, yes, it's less than on-road #2, and that's also why you're guilty of tax evasion if you're caught.

Yes, as well as off road diesel since there are no road taxes charged.



I would if a person would run a 1/2 and 1/2 mix if it would "thin" out the dye enough that it wouldn't be noticied?? (I'm not exactly sure what the dye is)

I lil red dye goes a very long way. Half a tank full could leave traces for numerous tank fulls.

I've heard that mixing a gallon of engine oil in your tank will dye the filter and everything black so that no red is noticeable. Many people run filtered used engine oil like this (read about it in the 2nd gen forum though). Just remember, never ever ever get caught breaking the law.

Home heating oil IS #2 diesel... with red dye. It will work fine, but the legal matters are a concern if you are caught. (I have run red fuel myself and it works fine. ) I personally add quite a bit or used motor oil to my fuel. I do not honestly know if it will confuse the "Feds" or not. I DO know the dye stays in the system and can be detected if they "dip" your tank for several tanks!

The other day I noticed UNTAXED UNDYED kerosene at a station. What gives? At 2. 69 a gallon, that is quite a tease, especially with winter on the way. It clearly stated, "clear" K, off road use only. Absolutely a cash purchase :-laf

You will NOT be able to dilute it enough to get rid of the red dye. Dye goes a long way, trust me, I make shampoo for a living!
