I want to share this with other members. I was short on cash last weekend and needed to degrease the engine and under hood area. Here is what I used and it works great!!!! In a 32 oz spray bottle, fill half way with ammonia, dump in some dish washing soap (when your wife is not watching ) go ahead dump a bunch in. top off with a little bit of water.

Now spray away. the grease and grime just melts away. rinse with garden hose.

In the spring I am going to try this on my radiator.

I am guessing that you mean dish soap like dawn or the like (you know for hand dish washing). This would be fine. Do not mix ammonia with DISHWASHER detergent. It contains phosphous and chlorine. I learn this the hard way on my garage floor. And yes, it was before I read the label.

What % concentration ammonia are you using?

OK heres another one - Coke in a spray bottle - spritz on gunk & grime then hose it away. Yeah - people actually drink that stuff . . .

here is a good one, oven cleaner if its really dirty it will clean grease off and paint if your not careful good for diff cleaning to. i use it on my tractors all the time, let it sit for 10 min and hose with water

Dang I never though about oven cleaner!

The coke trick also work in the washing machine on your greasy shop clothes, it cuts the grease and desolves it so it doesn't stick in your nice $900 washing machine like mine.

bad new on your pretty aluminum parts though, long enough they will disappear

NHelmer, I'm using Dawn soap in the mix. Because it says it cuts grease. (and leaves my hands nice and soft:rolleyes:)

johncameron, not sure what the concentration of the ammonia is . Its just the regular stuff you buy at the store.

Guy's, please try this mix, oven cleaner is very caustic and may damage rubber and plastic parts over time. Besides, in the long run this stuff is really cheap to make. spray this stuff with a straight stream. when you hit the same area the second time the crud runs right off.

I've always just used simple green. But I think I'm gonna try this mix. Thanks GHerrmann.

Hmmmm amonia and dissimilar metal joints (Aluminium to steel , visa versa) = electrolysis. It can attack aluminium alone but with seams of the intercooler, vp44, vacuum pump, radiator and intake plenumn, turbo, rims to hubs, and a few other odds and ends that contact each other with amonia accelerates corrosiveness.
