Air horn question

I recently came across an 1986 honda trx 70. It is in fantastic condition. It even has the original tires that are still 80% I cleaned up the carb and it started right up but did not run well. It ran for a few minutes, stalled and would not restart. It was getting fuel but when I checked spark it was almost more of a constant spark rather than on each cycle. It looks to have a CDI ignition system. Any Ideas?

Thanks.

I doubt it's ignition. If it's been sitting long at all I'd say it's probably carburation. Not trying to knock your wrenching skills, but we've had customers SWEAR they've totally cleaned a carb and they bring it in and it's still stopped up. The hole in the slow jet is only . 015". It stops up easily and it will not run unless you have the choke on if this is the case. Folks have a tendency, too, to hog these jets out using torch tip cleaners and such which will cause it to over-fuel and foul a plug. The petcock is part of the float bowl on that carb also and it or the screen gets clogged easily, also. I'd suggest taking the carb to a shop that does this every day and let them go through it. Like I said, I'm not trying to knock your wrenching skills. :D

Make sure the tank's not rusty and the rust is clogging the screen in the petcock. This is pretty common also.

You might also check the plug cap. They have a resistor in them that can go bad. Make sure to run a resistor plug in it because a non-resistor can cause damage to the CDI.

Those old 70 motors are tough and VERY dependable. It should serve you VERY well. :)

Thanks for the advice. The carb has lots of corrosion on the inside, so I just ordered a new carb. Since I plan to keep it for a long time I thought it would be good investment. Thanks!!
