Anyone have thoughts on the felt hood liner? Mine has been sagging for quite a while and is now resting on the taller items under the hood. I would like to remove it, anyone have any compelling reasons to leave it in?

I realize the sheetmetal of the hood will be exposed to more direct heat from the engine compartment, but will it damage the exterior finish? With winter coming up, I guess the snow left after I sweep everything off should melt sooner!?

I did some looking around on the net a few years ago looking for some sort of replacement but was not able to find anything. Any suggestions for a new liner that uses adhesive instead of cheap plastic retainers?

Thanks in advance for any and all insight.

Not as worried about sound. Between the FASS pump running and the radio, I probably wouldn't notice! I just don't want to buy a new hood because the paint took a beating.

Did a quick search and looks like Dynamat might be worth looking at a little closer. Anyone have any experience with Dynamat?

Check this site out. Aircraft firewall material hood liner pad for Mustang, Corvette, Grand National, many other cars I have talked to him about his product and installation. I am pretty sure I am going to try to put one on my SRT hood. They will be about $90. 00 or so. Glues on with 3M 80 spray adhesive. He seems like a very nice guy and has some nice looking work he has done. I found another style available from an outfit in Cal. Theirs fastens on like the OEM blanket, is a super heat resistant material and about $300. 00. They also make exhaust, turbo insulating blankets and more. I will find it and post it up here later.

The factory hood liner is a piece of garbage, so is the firewall liner. Both started sagging about a year ago, sagging badly, so I started looking for an alternative like you.

I installed FatMat on the entire underside of my hood, pretty much the same as Dyanmat, very easy to work with, does a GREAT job. It's self-adhesive. It is much less costly than the Dynamat. I am now working on the firewall. I have less engine noise than before, noticably less. When I get done with the engine compartment et al, I am also thinnking about doing the interior of my truck as well.

My 03 didn't even come with one. I installed one in 04 (all mounting holes were there) to try and quiet the Cummins a bit but I didn't really notice much difference. After all this time my liner still looks like new ~ no sag at all.

BTW, According to my parts guy, the hood liner is also a fire suppresent! In the event of a fire, it melts and smothers the fire.

Thanks for the input. Looks like I have a few more leads to chase down now. I like the idea of aircraft materials as I'm an airplane junkie at heart and having airplane bits on the truck is a nice tie-in. I think I'm going to pull it out for now and put more effort into finding a replacement in the short term. Is this self-adhesive stuff something a guy needs to pull the hood off to install?

As for the fire suppresent, I'm on the fence on that one. Read a post on a different forum where a guy claimed he cut his out and burned it with all his other garbage. Maybe thats because he cut it into strips or maybe its because the parts guy wants to sell a hood liner?

I removed the one on my original hood and eyeballed it trying to hold it up to the SRT hood and decided no way. It was coming apart anyway so I burnt it with some boxes, fire retardant, doubtful. Yes you would have to remove the hood and set it up on a table or something reasonably solid and padded to protect it to stretch /install the aircraft material.

BTW, the material the hood liner is the same material used on the firewall, it is certainly NOT fire supressant, in fact, it will catch on fire when exposed to high heat. I cooked my firewall liner with my top turbo after I installed my compounds. Had a blanket on the hot pipe, but the high heat in that area cooked it. Turned it into charcoal/ash, had I not removed it I probably would have had it catch fire at some point. I put the FatMat on that area, no problems now.

I saw a guys truck/hood and firewall area on fire at a truck pull, the factory materials have a rather low flash point, the material does not act in any manner towards fire supression, if anything, it is the MOST combustible material under the hood.

Well, factory liner is history. I'm going to spend the winter deciding what I want to do. More internet research revealed a couple of interesting routes; one guy airbrushed the liner on his Nitro kind of like they used to do on the sides on vans in the 70's, another guy took the new liner for his Viper and painted it and clear coated it. Apparently it eliminated the sag by making the whole thing very rigid.

Definitely some options. Thanks again for all the input.

Hood liner. Hmmm... if it's anything like the liner on the firewall, it will be something else for mice/rats to use for their nests. I'm sure they would appreciate it. Kinda expensive nest material, though.
