I think your guard only needs to come up past the top of the edge of the hood to work,I've seen some after market guards that come up much higher than necessary,I'd try and copy the OEM guard, which you can't see from the cab. I added the guards over my lights 40k after the middle guard and noticed no chips, did notice that after adding them that the turbulence increased as witnessed by the antenna and mirrors moving more, you're probably better off without them.

I received a LOT of chips over my lights, so I put the "eyebrows" on my truck.

Hey to ya!

It's my first post! I'm embarrassed to say how long I've been "lurking" around this sight (serious addiction). It has been extremely helpful in getting to know my truck and its potential. Recently you helped me select new brake pads (PF-CM), and tires (BFG 295's), as the originals were both shot after 28K miles.

I have some sizeable chips in the front of the hood, which are now showing rust. My dealer will fix them under warrenty, but I want to prevent them in the future. I'd like to get a polished S. S. hood shield. Cabela's has a nice looking set, but I may make my own (use a lot of S. S. at work), to save some money, and get a more custom look. My questions:

Could I go with a lower profile, and still be effective? (or would it just move the chips further up the hood?)

Do I need the "side" shields over the lights? (Does anybody have chipping problems there?).

Thanks

Some mount different than others, but most do not require drilling. Some of the eyebrows just mount with two way tape. As for the bug shield they usuaully use predrilled holes.
