If anyone has done this, and is willing to help me figure out how to attach one to mine I would appreciate it greatly!! I have a Dixco tach, new in the box, for a Ford/GM 6. 2 Diesel. I don't want to open the box so I can resell it if I cannot use it. I remember a while back a guy was telling me about buying a magnet kit from Radio Shack and hooking one up that way. I'm completely lost, but I need a tach.

Thanks for your help. .

I hooked one up to my 91 recently. I used a tach that runs off the alternator. follow what I pasted below from another forum.

No, you don't need that pin. My alternator tach (Motorola) just hooked up to one of the fields on the alternator right on the internal bridge rectifier. There are 4 fields that connect to the rectifier each with a small nut connection. If you take the back cover off of the alt, you can see each of them. I had to re-do this when I replaced the alternator on the 89, which is the same alternator on all year models, its just regulated differently. Then its a matter of adjusting the tach to the speed difference between the alternator and the crank. . about 1. 78:1 I think.

The tach will need to be calibrated, or at least checked. Mine was real close when I finally checked it with an optical tach.

If you have more questions you can send me a PM

Wes,

I have a magnet mount off the crank pulley. There are 2 magnets, 180* apart and a magnet with 2 wires off an oil pan bolt. Trouble free for almost 4 years. My tach is an isspro.

That was a Post I did on my 89 alternator Tach re-install. I should still have the photos somewhere here... The CD with my photos is in my service truck. I'll have to dig them up if you want em.
