Archived Hopping in rear end

My 98 2500 with a 350 limited slip started making a constant noise in the rear end. Yesterday, while coming to a stop, the rear hopped while applying the brakes at a very low speed. It would not do it by the time we got to the mechanic. It does not make noise turning. I have serviced it twice in the last 9 months with small amounts of material found on the drain plug. Nothing in the housing. It has 85,000 miles on it. Does it sound like a carrier barring going out?

I would pull the cover and do another inspection, If you found some metal than you ned to address the problem before it becomes much worse.

Rear hop

Doubt anything is wrong with the differential, check and see if one of the rear wheel cylinders or axle seals is leaking slightly. bg

Rear wheels

If the rear shoes get impregnated with axle lube that will cause them to grab harshly and do all sorts of stuff

no other choice but to replace seal(s) and shoes on both sides.

I had this happen on a 1986 drof F250 with full floating rear and had to replace both sides myself since the dealers mechanic didn't know ***** from shinola!

Maybe you had a rock or piece of gravel in one of the rear brake drums? Perhaps a broken piece of brake spring? Some metal is normal wear of a rear end. If you check it again and it is loaded with flakes, I would start looking.
