I have an '02 with 140,000 miles. Leaving the walmart parking lot yesterday the horn started honking. (might be a message here?)

But seriously, I pulled the airbag to look at the thing and when I jiggle the "horn ring" that sits on the colum just behind the steering wheel I can get the horn to go on and off. It appears that the cruse control is also in this same plastic housing.

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to disconnect the horn from this box without affecting the cruse control:

There is a 3 wire plug in the bottom of the "ring" that I unpluged to kill the horn but it also disables the cruise.

Oh also, I forgot to mark the airbag when I unplugged it. Anyone know if it is polarity sensitive?

thanks for any ideas

when you say u move the horn ring are you talking about the horn switch bracket or the round clock spring behind the steering wheel in the column? if you think the horn switch is the issue yes you should just be able to remove the horn wires and that solve ur problem, but u just wont have a horn:rolleyes:

Just make sure you.......

Unhook the batteries then wait a few minutes before messing with the airbag wiring or the clockspring for that matter. You don't want the airbag to deploy in your face while working on the steering wheel.

better to be safe than sorry

Thanks for the help so far.

1) I disconnected the batteries and pulled both air bag fuses before doing anything. then I reconnected the battery after removing the air bag.

2) so the questionable part is a "clock spring", sounds like a $200. 00 name to me I guess I'll start looking for one.

3)is the airbag polarity sensitive? the plug looks like it will fit either way.

4) I have to have the horn to pass upcoming inspection.

5) i disconnected the high pitch horn and the low pitch one sounds a lot better without the other one screeching horn.

thanks again, keep those ideas coming

clockspring recall.....

There was a clockspring recall out late summer of `01. Got mine changed on my `01. Could this be part of the problem? Hope this helps-

Jim.
