 Hey guys... ... I have viewed these forums for a long time, but this is the first time I have ever posted a question. I desperatley need some help and expertise. I have a 2001 4x4 that has about 110,000 miles on it. It has recently began to produce a smell that originates at the engine and blows back through the vent into the cab. When I say recently, it started about 10,000 to 12,000 miles ago, but has continued to get worse. It has reached a point that something has to be done about it. The only way to describe the smell is that it kind of resembles bad body odor... ... ... ... . now, now, before you guys start with all of the jokes about washing and/or deodorant... ... ..... this is a serious problem that I need to address as soon as I can. I value the experience on this website better than I do the service department at my local dodge dealership, so I'm counting on you guys to come through for me!!!!!

I run amsoil synthetic oil. The truck is in extremely good condition. I don't haul a great deal with it... ... . I mainly just run up and down the road. The engine is very clean... ... ... but the odor that it is producing is terrible. :{

Any help..... I mean any help would be greatly appreciated!!! :D

Thanks,

RH

Rotting material in your air intake for vent system? Try spraying lysol or other brand of disinectant into intake with fan on high a/c off. If that helps you will need to do some disassembly and cleaning for a perm. fix.

Also make sure the drain for the AC evaporator is not plugged. You would not believe some of the stuff that will grow when the drain is plugged.

The smell you're talking about could be the AC.

( Has happened to me too... )

There's no need to disassemble anything, you can do everything through the AC drain. It's located on the firewall below the PCM. Find a rubber hose to slip over the AC drain plug. From there fill the AC with HOT water. Have someone in the cab looking for water spillage though... About a quart of water should be enough. After 5-10 minutes lower the hose and drain the water. Repeat if needed. Has worked for me...

I would say its probably what paulb suggested but you might check your heater core to see if its weaping any.

Do as others said and remove the plastic vent cover at base of wind shield clean out any rotting leaves. hose out the area you can not see use low psi make sure drain is letting the water out . if not use a snake or other method to remove any thing that could and will block the drain. Then cover the underside of the vent with aluminum screen that is cut to fit and use U shaped half in wire to push through screen to top side twist to hold screen in place then spray paint the screen and wire ties . Replace the plastic cover . cost about a dollar worth of screen use aluminum as it will not rust out . Works for me . Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY

Thanks guys... ... . but I think that we are headed in the wrong direction. I know that this smell is not coming from the AC or anything else to do with the vent system. The smell originates from the heat of the engine. The hotter the truck gets the worse it smells. Once the truck gets hot you can open the hood and the smell will overtake you. I have had the AC problem... ... . so I know that this is different.

Thanks for all of the input.

Does the anti-freeze overflow bottle have anything strange in it? Is the anti-freese in it oily?

If it is the AC, you might try this: http://www.bgprod.com/bgprofessional/bgproducts/aircon.html

"Odors, bacteria, mold, spores, fungi, road grime, nicotine oils and debris accumulate in your car's air conditioning evaporator. BG Frigi-Clean restores heating/cooling efficiency and freshens interior air. It is a unique cleaning solution designed to quickly and effectively remove foul odors, bacteria, mold, spores, fungi, road grime, nicotine oils and debris that accumulate in your evaporator. BG Frigi-Clean in injected directly into the evaporator case through a patented nozzle. It foams up to completely fill the evaporator core where it also blasts away bug parts, pet hair, nicotine residue and other garbage. BG Frigi-Clean is bio-degradable, non-toxic, non-corrosive. "

Yuo sure you don't have a pack-rat or mouse nest somewhere in the truck. If it died in there... it would stink a little.

Sienfeld Episode

I think Sienfeld had to sell his car when this happened to him :-laf

I'll bet you have some rodents cooking somewhere. Had them make a nest in the aircleaner on my Isuzu Trooper one year. Can you imagine nesting on the intake side of the Turbo :{ What a scary ride. Mothballs are a good way to keep this from happening again assuming it is rodents. Sometimes the rodents smell better than the mothballs ;)

When was the last time that Overflow A>K>A PUKE Bottle was emptied??????

That rotten egg smellsure can drive one nuts . . . . . . untill one moves that puke can UNDER the truck and AWAY from the fan.
