Just curious.

About how much does a horse trailer with 5 horses weigh?

I passed two new Fords pulling similar rigs going up a hill outside of Bakersfield and before I pat myself on the back I would like to know about what they were lugging behind them.

BTW, fuel economy keeps improving. Got over 13 MPG towing the entire trip of 3700 Miles. I have 35,000 miles on the odometer and kept the speed 60 to 65 most of the time.

Most likely between 10 and 12 k. My 20' aluminum empty weighs 4400. Avg. horse is 1000 to 1250 lbs.

Or more!!

My Trails West four horse (Steel) trailer is almost 6000 with gear and no horses!! It could be over 13k if not an aluminum trailer.

My 24ft Exiss aluminum GN weighs 7000 lbs empty. This is 32ft over all length, 3 horse slant, 4ft mid-tack, 6 ft shortwall dressing area.

This '86 steel 5 horse belongs to a friend. Empty with no gear weighs 6500 lbs. No aerodynamics whatsoever. With 5 horses and gear I imagine it around 12 to 13k. I pull it without much problem. It's only a 19 foot box if you can imagine that! The front tack is mighty small, about 24" shortwall. The stalls really aren't bad for normal sized horses. The down side is the wheel wells won't allow for a 10 ply tire and the 8 plys wear out very fast. My new 2002 Trails west steel 4 horse weighs around 5500, empty. With 4 horses and gear, I'd guess around 11k. Axles are rated for 12k.

Thanks all for the info. From the way I passed them and left them in the dust I assumbed they must be pulling some 16K+ anchors.

I'm trying to judge my pulling power vs the Duramax and Fords and that was as close as I could come on this trip. One of these days I'll get the opportunity to dyno mine and find out the actual torque.
