Has anybody installed one of these? Curious what you thought of the install and the performance of the product. Below is the description of the product from JRE's site.

Tom

The cooling fan in your Cummins diesel is only need about 10% of the time yet is on all the time. æ This Horton on/off electric fan clutch allows your fan to "freewheel" when not needed. æ A thermal switch in the block turns it on only when necessary. æ This unit will free up about 20hp when the fan is not engaged!æ The hp gain combined with more consistent operating temperatures leads to better fuel mileage and cleaner combustion.

Horton Fan

tjtrujillo,

I installed one of these fans in May, '01 on my '99. Installation was pretty straight forward, with the exception of trying to locate the radiator drain. This drain is located on the bottom of the radiator shell on the left side directly below the windshield washer resevoir. You'll need a good flashlight/worklight to locate it. I finally had to come to the TDR board and ask for assistance. One thing: when you open the petcock, remember that it's PLASTIC! PULL out the stopper and twist 1/2 turn. If you twist it as if you were going to unscrew it, it'll break! Use care! The radiator needs to have about 2 gallons of coolant drained in order to install the temperature sender that comes with the fan.

After you get the fan is installed on the engine, the fan shroud needs to be cut out to accept the wiring that connects the clutch to the main wiring harness. Remove the shroud completely to do this. A NOTE OF CAUTION: when installing the clutch wiring, make SURE that there is NO SLACK in the wires between the clutch and the bracket that is provided by Horton (this bracket mounts at the front of the radiator). My suggestion: in addition to the phenolic nut and washer provided, use some nylon tiewraps to secure the wiring to the bracket. Lesson learned; I didn't do that and wound up sucking the wiring into the fan blades and VOILA! NO FAN. I don't think that I'm the only one whose done this, but "forewarned is forearmed :D

Other thatn these caveats, I had no problem. Fan works as advertised:p Not as much engine noise, faster warm ups, more power. Plus I realized about a 1-2 mpg increase.

For additional info on this install, you might want to do a thread search on Horton. LOTS of good info from these guys;)

To Fan or not

Just had a question about running an electric fan, single or double.

Or the Horton.

The Horton is a little pricey @$600, I could run a thermostat regulated electric for $125-$150.

Just wandering, new at this and need to save as much as possible for future addiction therapy. BOMBING

Thanks

Scott

Can not remember who but someone was trying to use an electric fan with thermostat either pusher or puller. Could never find one to but out the amount of CFM of the stock fan. I don't recall what that CFM was for stock fan. Even racing fans did not seem to be enough. Wish I could remember more. Sorry. :(
