I have had a horton fan clutch in my truck for about two months. Runs rarely, cools quick when it runs, helps speed warmup. so far I was happy. I am still happy with the product but the installation instructions "bit" me or rather the radiator. I used the book, finished the installation , during the install I found a slip of paper referring to the bracket that bolts under the radiator support and holds the wire in front of the fan. I was not supposed to put it in. It was in it worked so why undo it?
WELLL--- heres why! The clearance is tight, And as I was 4-wheeling into a berm(slowly) the fan kicked on at that moment, caught the wire and "P" strap bolt and pulled the mess 1/4 revolution through the radiator. Fan was bent. Happened saturday, I am not happy. I will need at a minimum to buy a new radiator and replace the fan of the horton. It sits now at a dealership in outer mongolia PA. I mean sundsbury PA. It is zimmermans dodge. If anyone has any info on this dealer or the right mechanic to ask for, drop an E-mail or post.

Peter,
I guess now is a little late to be posting this, but I had the same problem about 6+ months ago with my Horton in a 1998. 5 24 valve ISB.

The Horton Fan Clutch is a 3rd party item distributed through MOPAR. Since that is true, it also carried the DC MOPAR warranty. Since I got my fan through my local Dodge dealer, they agreed to "help me out" and get me a replacement Horton fan and radiator under warranty. This did take a little persuading since it was an owner installed part and they could have blamed it on faulty installation. It took a little while and they had to put the factory fan back on the truck with the new radiator while waiting for a new Horton fan that was on national backorder.

Horton apparently has at least two different versions of their fan circulating through MOPAR. The MOPAR parts number for the 24v is now 82205124. The older part number was in one of the back issues of TDR, but I don't have it handy. I couldn't get an answer why the part number changed and if there were any changes between the old kit (with the old part number) and the new kit(with the new part number).

The kit I got was the older part number that was obtained from another dealer since the Fan was on national backorder. It only had a single page insert that showed a wiring change for the ISB. There was no other insert about a problem with a bracket or anything else to do with the 24 valve engine.

The installation of the fan went smoothly and everything worked well. I did notice the clearence was pretty tight and I used a block of wood and a mallett to get the wiring bracket and it's P strap as close to the radiator as possible. About two months after installation the fan did the same as yours; it engaged after coming to a stop at an off-ramp and drove the wiring bracket into the radiator.

Luckily (if you can say that after a problem like that) the dealer was only about a mile away from where the truck broke down. I had it towed to the dealer seeing $$$ flash in front of my eyes for all the cost of a new radiator, fan, etc. I left it at the dealer and just told them to fix it.

After talking to the dealer a couple of days later, they said they would cover it all under warranty. This included a replacement Horton fan but was not supposed to include the installation of the replacement. They put in the new radiator and reinstalled the factory fan to get me on the road. A new Horton was ordered but it was on national backorder. I wanted to wait for the latest and greatest Horton fan so I didn't look at inventory at other dealer locations this time.

After a couple of months, the Horton cam in and I called the dealership. They said to bring the truck in and they would take care of it. They weren't supposed to put the new Horton on but they goofed and the mechanic had already put the fan on before they caught it. I think I would have rather done the re-installation myself to compare the new to the old, but the Mrs. had that "you messed it up the first time" attitude and wanted the dealer to do it. The new fan with the updated part number has at least an inch of clearence between the wiring bracket P clip and the fan. That's about 3/4" more than what the old fan had. I'm convinced that there was a design modification done between the new and old fan but can't prove it since the dealer couldn't find all the paperwork for the new fan.

See if the dealer will cover anything under warranty since it's a MOPAR part. If they won't, go talk to Horton about their warranty.

Let me know if I can help you with anything.

My dealer here in Canada cannot find the Horton listed up here. Does anyone have the MOPAR part number for the Horton?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the help. I can refer to the post when talking to the dealer. Called horton customer service and they did not have to much of a clue either. I do not think I wil have too much luck with getting it covered under a warrantee but I will try (Horton or DC). In the meantime the dealer sounds like they can do the repair completely.

According to my Mopar part man, Mr. Mopar,
the old part number for the Horton fan was 82205124 and sold for $895. 00.

The new and improved version has two part numbers, 82202282 adapter and 82205125 for the fan. Cost is $703. 20 for both.

I'm going to check and see if buying direct from Horton is cheaper.

BTW. If you drive 12,367 miles and it improves mileage 2 mpg, you have paid for the fan.

A little more power and faster warm ups.

All,

Boy! Did I divide wrong.

$1. 00 (fuel cost) / 20 (mpg) = $0. 05 (cost per mile)
$1. 00 (fuel cost) / 22 (mpg w/fan) = $0. 045455 (cost per mile)
$0. 05 - $0. 45455 = $0. 004545 (improvement)

$700. 00 (cost of Horton) / $0. 004545 (improvement) = 154,000 (miles to drive to break even)

IE;

154,000 miles 154,000 miles
20 mpg 22 mpg
------------- -------------
7700 7000
* $1. 00 * $1. 00
------------- -------------
$7,700 $7,000

In 154,000 miles you break even with the cost of fuel at $1. 00.

Lesson? Don't calculate in haste. Sorry for the post with wrong info.

Thanks to Tom for the email asking me to explain.

To add on with Ben if your paying closer to $1. 40 it would take only 110,000 miles or if you are only getting 18mph and it bumps to 20 it will take you 90,000 to break even - Now you drop the price of the Horton to $550 and you can break even in 121,000 with Bens' example or 86,500 @ 1. 40 per gallon or 70,800 at the 18mph base. So it seems to me that the higher the price of fuel and the lower your mileage the faster you break even. I only drive 7500 a year so pay back will be in 9. 5 years or when I sell it to my Brother in 4 or 5 years. Sounds good to me and I like the idea of faster warmups since work is only 18 miles away.

Or, if you live in Oregon, where we pay the highest fuel prices in the nation, payback would be about a week and a half... .

Does anyone know where the Horton fan, part numbers 82202282 adapter and 82205125 fan can be purchased lower than $703. 20 for both?

That's the Dodge dealer best price.

I still want one if I have to drive 400,000 miles to justify it. #ad

1200 miles so far. Mileage up to 17. 9 mpg.

(worry) Anyway the truck is at the dealer still. They talked to horton and/or schneid and got the right parts to fix it on the way. Being 200 miles from where I am at a dealer is not the best place for my truck. I did not buy the fan for the mileage alone. the faster warmup gives me more warm time each time I start in the cold. The power is available to me to use not power the fan until needed and yes the mileage.

Dittos on finding one cheaper than 703. 20. I want one, but I sure would like to see a price closer to 500. 00.

I was in a Dodge dealer friday and asked about a Horton, they just give me a dumb look, they had no ideal what one was. I told them and they said we have no info on them, I guess it depends on the dealer.

I'm going to buy one for my 2001(if I ever get a chance to order it) so, I phoned Horton a couple weeks ago and they sent me a complete package of brochures on the EC450 fan clutch that even included the Dodge installation manual. After reading the manual over a couple of times, looks like a pretty straight forward install that should only take a few hours.

Any commments on the install?

Eric

ONE THING I DIDN"T LIKE ABOUT MY HORTON FAN IS THE WATER TEMP SENDED. IT KICKS ON AT 200 AND OFF SOME WHERE AROUND 190. NOW . . YOUR THERMPSTAT OPENS AT 190 AND WITH A HORTON WILL STAY OPEN. THAT MEANS IFF YOU ARE PULLING A HILL(ROCKIES)AND ITS 110DEG AND YOUR LOAD IS HEVEY YOU BETTER REACH DOWN AND KICK ON THE OVER RIDE SW. BECAUSE YOU ONLY HAVE 15 DEG'S TO PLAY WITH WHEN YOU ARE HALF WAY UP THE ROCK. WHAT EVER THE GAUGE READS IS ALSO WHAT THE RADATOR TEMP IS. A BETTER SENSOR WOULD BE 195 DEG. ON SETTING. WHICH CAN BE HAD BY GOING TO THE HORTON SUPPLIER'S PARTS HOUSE AND ASKING FOR IT (USED ON BIG RIG'S) FOR WHAT EVER SETTING YOU CHOOSE BUT THEY SUPPLY THE 200 DEG SENSOR WITH THE KIT.
P. S. DONT PANTIC THE FIRST TIME YOU SEE YOUR GUAGE SWING CLEAR TO THE WHITE LINE TO THE RIGHT. ITS 200 DEG'S.
AS FAR AS THE UNIT MINE RAN FOR 210K BEFORE IT FAILED. IT WORKED IT HEART OUT THE LAST 50K . I USED RAD. FLUSH ONCE A YEAR . YOU PUT IT IN AND RUN FOR 10K BEFORE YOU DRAIN BUT WITH 600K ON MY 96 THE LIME STILL BUILT UP SO TO GET THE TEMP BACK TO WHERE YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO BACK OFF I INSTALLED A NEW RADIATOR

Found this link for the ec450 fan:
http://www.hortoninc.com/vehicle/engine/ec450.htm

Maybe I read the posting too fast, however I was wondering if you have to cut into the AC pressure loop for the AC pressure sensor or can we piggyback off an existing sensor??

Eric,

The install was easy on my 92 D350 when I had it. The big nut on your viscous fan drive to the fan hub isn't real tight and I used a hammer and punch(be careful and don't get carried away) to loosen it. The Horton will tighten the nut everytime it cycles on so if you ever remove it you may have to take it to a Cummins distributor to get it off. The wiring harness they send for the older model Ram wasn't exactly a fit but with a little shade tree engineering everything worked. The only thing I didn't like was the pain it would be involved in replacing the fan belt. Horton needs to put a plug in the wiring harness to the clutch so you can disconnect it and replace the fan belt. Or you can do what "tdrmbramer"(good idea) did with his.

I was real pleased with the operation of the fan clutch. It cured my heating problem. Once you have it installed, don't panic while watching your temp gauge!! It will run higher until the fan engages then drop like a rock even in 100+ temps.
