Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) hot re-start stalling

I am starting to have a minor hot re-start problem. It doesn't happen all the time and I can't re-duplicate it in my driveway. The problem happens this way:



1) stop the truck in hot weather

2) try to start the truck 15 seconds later

3) engine starts and shudders and then dies

4) crank again, the engine starts and shudders and dies

5) crank again, the engine runs like normal



It seems like it has air in the fuel system for those first two cranks, then fine. I can't find any diesel leaks anywhere and can't smell any either. Unfortunately, the three times it has happened I haven't been in a location I can start looking under the hood. As I wrote up top, I haven't been able to re-create problem in my driveway.

If it was air leaking into the line it should do it overnight also, but you say it occurs only when hot. Does it always do it just twice? Maybe the fuel solenoid is not opening and allowing fuel to flow. Not sure, just thinking out loud.

That's a good thought and certainly is possible. The solonoid is about six months old I purchased it from Larry B's. I replaced the original factory one under the banner of "preventative maintenance". I thought about the fuel shutoff relay, but when that went out before the truck wouldn't start at all, just crank. I do have a spare FSR behind the seat, I'll replace it this afternoon and see if it makes any difference. I didn't keep my old solonoid, it was in bad shape as it had been missing the rubber boot for some time. (however, it was working when I removed it)



So far, it has taken two seperate turns of the key to get the truck started once it's having the problem.

my 06 is doing simliar things. hot restart with 5 seconds to 2 minutes of it being off it takes 1-3 tries to get it going. ( like 3-6 seconds with starter, when normally 1-2 seconds. any ideas?)

I'm think along the lines of MFBurns - my experience was the quick turn-around restart (pizza-pickup/hot - restart) was a problem - letting the truck sit for even 15 minutes made the restart normal. I traced mine to corrosion on the shut-off plunger due to a cracked boot. From the posts I've seen with an air-bleed in the fuel line, the longer thr truck sits, the WORSE it gets. Mine was just the opposite (thermal expansion???).
