I know how these high gas and diesel prices are effecting everyone, but I just got back from Germany and thought I would let you know that our gas and fuel prices are a bargain. Yes, they are currently paying $7. 75/gal for gas and $5. 32/gal for diesel. With diesel costing almost $2. 50/gal less then gas, you can see why nearly 60-70% of the country uses diesel cars and trucks.

I figure, by this time next year $3. 75/gallon will be "a good price" (just like $2. 75/gallon is a good price this year). I expect diesel to be close to those numbers.

The euro is about an even exchange with the US dollar. I travel to Germany each year for 2 weeks to visit my family there. I love renting a turbo diesel VW and hitting the autobahn!

The USA Liberals have whined for years that we in this country are "spoiled" - and SHOULD willingly pay more for our fuel "just like the Europeans do... " - of course, it's mainly well-heeled liberals like Barbra Streisand, Rosie O'Donnell and Alec Baldwin making the most such noise - folks with enough $$$ that trivialities like fuel costs aren't even major items on their monthly budgets...

Yeah - if *I* was a multi-millionaire, I'd probably not be too riled at what it cost fill the tank on my Rolls and Ferrari either...

Don't overlook that TAXES in European countries account for much of their higher cost - JUST AS it does for MANY of the OTHER goods the Europeans buy - in those countries, the government is the major recipient/beneficiary of high fuel costs - in THIS country, it's the CEO's and stockholders in the individual oil companies - and to tell the truth, I really dunno which system is WORSE!

But they BOTH suck! #@$%!#@$%!

I usually disagree with you (to some extent) on these fuel price threads, Gary, but in this case I agree.

Personally, I think paying the extra money to CEOs and stockholders is the better system. The government would just take the taxes and mis-appropriate or waste them anyway. Better that the "Joe American Citizen" make the money.

You haven't bought any Euros lattly... . I only wish they were a one to one exchange rate. I purchased 1,000 Euros before my trip and it cost $1,504. 63.

Better save up some extra cash before your next trip to Germany.

It is more expensive for sure there but it is taxes that make up the higher price of fuel there. Below are a couple articles that cite some figures. One thing I noticed in one of them was that average fuel economy here is 21mpg vs 32mpg there. And as mentioned diesel vehicles are the norm mainly due to the price difference in fuel. However one of the articles states that they are changing the tax structure over the next few years and diesel will get much closer to gas tax wise.

And this one talks about some of the merits and demerits of high gas tax as mentioned in above posts

I just got back from Norway on Friday and diesel over there was 9. 85 kroner to the liter. The Kroner was 6 per dollar. That makes diesel over there 6. 56 dollars per gallon. 60% of the price over there is taxes. One of our guys has family over there an his cousin was buying a Mitsubishi SUV and it was 800,000. 00 Kroners. 350,000 was the price of the vehicle and the other 450 was taxes. Too rich for my blood

Prices in Sweden

Gas: 6. 38$/Gallon

Diesel: 5. 74$/Gallon

I have 56 mile roundtrip every day to work. It eats up 15% of the paycheck every month using my gas 240 :) -I'm fixing up a diesel as we speak. .

The problem here is that if i get a newer diesel car here i get like 5 or 6 times the taxation. Therefore old Mercedes diesels pre 78 (30 years old) are fetching nice money cause they are excluded from tax.

For example a VW TDI -05 costs like 8000SEK in tax/year (1000$).
