I plan to keep my truck for the "Duration". My truck is a 2007, 5.9, G56. I know of the good durability of the 12 valve and early 24 valve starters. The new style starters must use a planetary gear reduction. So has anyone had any issues with these different design starters? I look to keep spare parts on hand.

The truck currently has 108,028 and counting with the original starter.

No issues with the starter so far, but I did have to replace the batteries a couple years ago. No issues since then!! :)

I have an opportunity to buy a new starter as a spare. just wondering if it would be a good idea. When I worked at UPS, we had some 12 and 24 valve Cummins package cars. They replaced starters on a regular basis with brand new Nippon Denso gear reduction starters and threw the used ones away. Needless to say, I some how ended up with a few. Two of them were close to brand new. Used a few of the older ones for emergency repairs.
