How can we get a million miles out of our cummins

what does it take to get a million miles out of our engines

what do the guys do to get a milion miles?

I will do some research on this and see what I come up with as for my truck it has 160. 000 in the clock

Odds would be lots better for guys who leave their trucks stock, employ workloads within clearly indicated manufacturer limits, use name brand, quality lubes and filters - and tend to drive mostly long haul trips rather than lots of of stop and go city use.

Regular maintenance, and drive as though you actually VALUE the truck - and you have a lot's better chance at lofty lifespan and mileages for your truck.

Really not all that big a mystery... ;) :D

Die hard Ford people like to say, "It's too bad Dodge put a 1,000,000 mile engine on a 70,000 mile truck". My response to that is, I give them the bird. :-laf

How long to 1,000,000 miles?

At my rate of about 15,000 miles per year, my question is, am I going to live long enough to see 1,000,000 miles if my truck does? Considering my mods and the truck's commuter use, it's a toss up - who's going to last longest.

Neil

I'm number one! At least that's what the other motorists tell me :D

the tdr magazine had an article on a '94 2wheel drive some time ago. the folks used it as a professional hauler. they drove it almost everyday on long hauls, would let it idle like a big rig while getting something to eat. bone stock, used non-synthetic oil. the owners said they turned it into an occaisional driver/farm truck at about 1. 2Mmiles when the structural dodge parts started to fail (can't remember what those were).

one thing i remember was that they were fanatical about the scheduled maintenance intervals but only used recommended parts/fluid. nuthin' fancy!

Who cares if the CTD will last 1M miles - the rest of the truck won't if used as a personal vehicle instead of a hot shot rig.

we live in palm beach county Florida we see 40's 50's 60's car all the time that are in vary good shape. I thank it's how you treat your truck

stay on top of fixing the little things.

when I did live up north we add a qt of motor oil to the inside of the doors

to keep them from rusting out

we would drain it out after a day or so but it would help to keep the doors from rusting out.

as well as good under coat

that salt is hard one a car or truck

the sun is what gets us here

my truck is white so it's not so bad

NVR hit the nail on its head! AMEN! I bought my truck with 82k last May and now show about 213k so I will let you know if it lives to be 1 million in the next few years if I dont get fed up with changing out all the Dodge parts around my GOOD engine. I have replaced so many things so far it is easier to name what hasn't been changed. Im on transmission 4, transfer case 3, VP-44 2, 5 carrier bearings, 3 rear axle pinion seals, 3rd set of ball joints, 4 track bars before I got wise to Lukes Link, 3 sets of shocks, 7 sets of front pads and new rotors, 2 vacuum pumps, 2 fan clutches, 3rd waterpump, 3 front bumpers before I built my own, doors are rotted out, boxsides are worse than my neighbors 72 F-150 parts truck, 5 windshields, 2 sets of mirrors, etc etc.

I can't wait to get my Ford/ Cummins conversion done and rolling!

I believe Gary hit it on the head, if you use the truck daily but don't abuse it, of course some of us still need to fix the KDP( i have the info and just have to wait until pay day) and basically for body parts have either a good parts place or junk yard nearby, the 1 million miles is very possible, i myself average around 25,000 miles a year. my 2000 has 120,600+ showing, the 92 well its showing 56000+(VSS hadn't been replaced until i took ownership) add another 46000 to that = 102,000 on the 12V.

You also have to remember these are trucks not rare antiques that are going to be around 100yrs. damn rust lol... .

Umm, WTH are you doing with your truck? Sounds like you should be driving a Bradley... ...

I beat the living crap out of my truck...

But I have nothing on CSnyder, and his list of parts

3 front bumpers!!!?? 2 sets of mirrors???

Currently on the first set of brake pads since the factory pads, cupholder was replaced @ 35K, front shocks @ 30K, track bar @ 40K, currently on 2nd re-man power steering pump (killing the factory pump was MY fault at 40K).

My truck currently sits at 60K

NVR, I run all over the midwest buying and selling farm equipment with my truck and gooseneck so it gets used but not abused. I live in a critter infested area and they are the reason for the bumpers and one set of mirrors. My wife was responsible for another set when she hit the garage door opening with them up in tow mode. Perhaps some of the members who know me will chime in here and say how well I do take care of my truck. I mean for 213k it is in great shape physically. I cant help that I live in the salt belt and it is rusting away. I have dreams about that commercial where the cars are blowing away as dust when the owner is right next to it. However I use my trucks and dont drive them as a car like most members here do. My transmission failures all happened one right after another because my 5 star dealer had a crappy shop doing remans for them. The 2nd transfer case only lasted 2 days because of a Dodge mistake and the 5 carrier bearings were also mistakes made by my dealer because they kept installing them wrong. I left out lots of things that have went wrong with the truck too not to mention that my ignition isnt working and I have to hotwire it to make it run because Dodge has sent me the wrong switch 3 times now. I have lost faith in Dodge completely since I bought this truck but I still love the Cummins and had my wife not loved my truck so much and gave me many memories in it I would part it out. Chris

Given your first post, I"m thinking you are the master of hyperbole...

Curious, how much are you towing? It really sounds like you should step up to a medium duty truck. The Cummins is rated/designed for what I think you do but it's the rest of the truck that can't handle the loads.

cummins is a good place to take your truck to

they know what the hell thay are doing

Cummins works on the ENGINES not the rest of the truck. Last time I checked my truck is a DODGE (DiamlerChrysler) product with a Cummins engine... .

Brian

With the fairly frequent comments/complaints as to the nasty DODGE stuff surrounding the Cummins, I really wonder if any similar year Ford or GM *really* does better in the long haul as compared to the DC stuff?

OR, are some here seriously under-estimating the Dodges *used in similar service* as the Fords and GM stuff - are all aspects of the Ford and GM "wrappers" *really* all that superior and flawless compared to Dodges?

Ford/GM bodies never rust out? Transmissions and other drivetrain items never, or rarely fail? Their paint never fades or peels?

I suspect some here - and in the other brand camps, are worshiping a God that really doesn't exist! ;) :D :D

If you and Gary think Fords are better, go get a Ford and quite knocking Dodge. I've had Ford and I've had it with Ford. Engine aside, my Dodges have been great. In the 10 years I had my 95 Dodge, it was never once in the shop. Can a 10 year old Ford owner say that? So far my 05 has been as good.
