OK - I want to be certain that I have a leak... ... has anybody made a connection that will allow you to connect the input and return hoses and install a pressure gauge????????

If you pressurize the system at the radiator cap it will work just the same as trying to isolate it. There is nothing that isolates the core from the pressure applied at the cap.

Just a note of caution.

I watched a friend pressurize a heater core with a garden hose. It looked like an accordian opening up, blew that sucker up like a balloon. But it didn't leak, it just would fit back where it came from.

If it is out of the truck it is pretty easy to do.

Take a rag stuff it in one of the connectors, take hose (with small nozzle) and put in the other connector. Turn on hose it will show a leak, before pressure can rise to high, the water pressure will blow the rag out.

If you do the radiator cap pressure test you could end up with coolant all over the floor, so will need to put a pail or two under heater outlets.

If your heater core is leaking wont you smell antifreeze inside the cab. Also will have steam on inside of windshield after it has been parked for a short while.

I always test complete cooling systems. yes you should be careful if you use a garden hose. most municipal water systems have at least 60psi. I have never had to test just a core before. out of the truck it is easy. but if you are that far just replace it. if it is leaking you will smell coolant and it will problably be all over the inside of your windows.
