Stiff Steering????

Title speaks for itself. I'm installing Big Bob's bracket between the seats. I found a plug in the firewall which I removed and passed my coax through... only one slight problem. It's about 4' too short to make it under the counsole and between the seats...

Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone came in through the 4wd shifter under the counsole somehow. I found two bolts securing the counsole but before I broke it I put them back in and I figured I'd hit up the TDR as to how that counsole comes out.

But, no need to remove the counsole if I can't get the coax in that way anyway. So, anyone bring their coax in through there?

If this doesn't work it's off to the store to make an "extension cord" of sorts for my co-phase cable... which while stupid, it looks like my only option.

Dunno if the 3rd gennie stuff is made the same as my '02, but on mine, I removed the passenger side door sill plate, and there is a VERY generous trough there that allows considerable room for coax and various wiring. I drilled down thru that for entry of my various leads, ran the wiring under the carpet and seats where most of my radio stuff is installed (see my readers rigs section under ham radio) - and then used silicon seal to protect the entry point thru the sill section. Once the sill plate is reinstalled, absolutely NO sign of wiring can be seen.

Every time I get ready to ask a question someone answers it in advance. :D

Thanks Gary,I'm installing a CB and amp and need to bring in some cables myself. Oo.

How long is your coax? Most are 18 foot, a full wave length. You might have a 9 foot coax, if so, you can change it to a 18 footer. Just a thought.

It's 18 feet long. I have a quadcab, that's why it's too short. I'd prefer to come in by the 4wd shifter, I just don't know that there is a path the cable can take through there.

Has anyone had their counsole/shifters out?

Tim,

If I recall correctly, you missed at least one screw that holds the console down. There should be one under the front left square-ish cup, one under the cup holder and one under your transfer case shifter boot. It should then come up and back to remove. If you want it all the way out you'll either need to remove the shift knob or remove the shifter itself (assuming you have a manual transmission). I've had my console off several times for various upgrades, to include a BIG BOB mount, and it is pretty easy once you find all the screws. Good luck! BTW, nice color choice! :-laf

Here's what shows on mine - the main box for the Icom 706, and the Ameritron 600 watt amp are under the seat, and all power/antenna cables up thru the passenger sill area to the gear - can you see ANY of it? :D :D

Here's the 600 watt amp, once the seat is slid all the way forward...

Tim,

Where did you mount your antenna? If you stated it, I couldn't find it.

By telling us where your antenna is mounted, it may help us route the coax.

My antennas are in the box, in stake pocket mounts. The cables are run down inside the box sides, secured to the frame, down the frame rail with the fuel lines, and up through the firewall.

Instead of going through the firewall I'd like to see the cable go through up under the counsole.

Do the shifters just unscrew? On all my past rigs, they did. These don't seem to.

Tim,

I don't have a 6-speed, but I would think that the shift console would come off and you should be able to run the coax up by the shifter.

Just thought of another possibility. On the back of the cab, in front of the bed there are some air vents that you might be able to run the coax through.

I'm going to take it apart tomorrow and see what happens. If anyone has any tips on how to remove the t-case shifter I'd appreciate it.

Cryppie or anyone else that may know,

Is there enough clearance to utilize both the Cup Smootie(from Geno's) and Bob's CB mount?

In other words I want both the CB mount and the Cup Smoothie since you lose the cup holders on the floor.

Thanks.

I just checked and the Genos Cup Smoothie will not fit with the Big Bob mount on my truck. It lacks about 1/2" to clear ok. I never could get the Cup Smoothie to latch correctly no matter how I shimmed or adjusted, so I took it off before I installed my CB with Big Bob's mount.

You might be able to get it to work by not pushing the mounting bracket all the way against the bolts securing the center section. There is at least that much play in the slots, just dont know how that would effect the stability.

Tim,

This is out of the 2004 DR Manual. Might be more confusing than helpful.

I believe there are cab vents behind the back seats. If you came in that way, you could then run the coax under the door sill plates. This would have the advantage of keeping it away from your running gear.

Just a thought.

Bob

Well, I broke down and extended the coax. I installed big bob's custom bracket and my $12 CB radio temporarily until I can get me a REAL radio.

I've got some serious reception with 5 footers, too. :)

Good info JVolpe, but Tim wanted to remove the counsole :-laf
