I have a 98 Quad Cab 12V, it has 76,000 Miles on it and I bought it new. The Truck has a problem starting in the morning and once It's started it runs great with no problems after the first start. I think that the idle is too low, any ideas on ho :) wto turn up the idle? Any other ideas on why it could be hard starting for the first start in the AM. Thanks for all your help.

Breed,

When was the last time you changed the PITA rubber fuel lines? If you did change them. Did you use marine grade fuel lines. Does the engine have some white smoke(small amount) upon start up?

If you think your idle is to low, try giving it some throttle upon starting. If it starts quickly, then it is low idle.

Just another thought - if the truck's been anywhere damp (not NV) or the boot on the shut-off solenoid is cracked the plunger could be sticking that first start-then frees up. While you're checking idle, unbolt the two mounting bolts for the solenoid and check the boot.

Adjusting the idle is pretty simple. Finding the adjustment screw is the hard part. You only need one wrench, a 10 mm box end. Loosen the lock nut. Take the load off the screw by moving the throttle linkage with your left hand. You should be able to turn the adjustment screw with your fingers. When you get it right then tighten the lock nut.

If the fuel hoses are the originals you need to replace them. If they are not bad now they will be. You can get good diesel rated hose from http://www.fostertruck.com/dodge/default.htm . Fuel hose in parts stores is for gasoline powered vehicles. It won't work for diesel in spite of what the clerks say.

If replacing the fuel hoses does not work then read this:
