I took off the muffler, put a 4" to 3" reducer and 27" piece of straight pipe in its place. It sounds good, but at 70mph (2000rpms) it has a terrible drone. I have had straights on other Dodges, and never could hear any drone in the cab. What is the best (cheapest) way to fix it. I need money for shooting prarie dogs this time of year.

A few ways to eliminate any possible drone when straightpiping is to utilize thicker replacement hangers for the replacement pipe. Another consideration is to use a thicker walled pipe. Alot of people have posted that they keep the resonator on because it eliminates any possible drone. It surprises me you have some.

When I straightpiped my truck we took off both the muffler and resonator and replaced it with a piece of 12 gauge straight pipe and used 7/16 hanger rod. I have no drone and love the way it sounds.

Resonation is usually caused by vibration. If you add some more hangers you may eliminate it. It could be that simple ;)

Good Luck

Just got rid or the resinator yesterday, I had a drone and still have it, even more so now I think. Dosen't bother me though. I think I am getting the worst MPG in the last 24 hours:D I am looking for hills, and narrow streets. And of course, the passanger window is down:D I LOVE THIS SOUNDOo.

My "drone" does not start till around 80+mph. At that speed even the stock exhaust is pretty loud. IMO The noise is just the roar of the enging when it is putting out that much power. I don't think it's being caused by a resonant vibration in the exhaust system.

Either way, I may get a performance muffler. Give up the cool sound around town for a quieter ride on road trips.

Chace TX,

Others have said to use a heavy-duty muffler clamp, slide it up and down the pipe and clamping it in different spots they can change the frequency of the drone. By doing this you may be able to find the right frequency where the drone will not affect you. You may want to give this a try, and it's cheap if it works.

I have read that a 24' long inch angle iron straped with a set of muffler clamps or welding on to middle of straight part of pipe will stop the frequency hum or drone . Don't have that problem ,stock LOL Ron in LOUISVILLE KY:confused:   :D

I removed the Magnaflow mufler from my 4" Jardine system about 2 months ago and yes, I too have this extremely noticeable drone starting at 2000 RPM and gets much louder with increased RPM. I am going to try the extra clamps/hangers and then a piece of angle iron as several other threads on this subject have suggested.
