How do I fix the transfer case shifter rattle?

What is a KDP and why do I need to fix it?

The abbreviation KDP stands for Killer Dowel Pin.

This is a indexing pin in the casting used to align the gear case cover.

Over time this pin can "walk" out and drop down. When this happens, the pin gets caught between the gears inside the cover and jammed between the gear and the aluminum gear case cover.

This results in the aluminum cover being severely cracked or shattered and huge oil loss and costly repair.

It can be fixed by using a dowel pin "jig".

This repair can be done by a number of shops out there, and also by using a set of KDP jig kits that circulate around to those who have their name on a list waiting to do it on their own or with some help.
