How do I ID the 48RE ?

Greetings folks, Had the truck in the shop yesterday, and my mechanic said it looked like my transmission was a 47RE... My window sticker states the truck has the 48RE... Is there any way I can definitively ID this transmission ?



I take it the 48 & 47's look the same from the outside ?

Look at the Equipment Identification sticker inside your glove compartment. If it is a 4 speed it should be the 48RE.

Crunch, I just checked, and it says it's a 4spd...

I think both the 47re and 48re are a 3 speed with overdrive, that they call a 4 speed. That is what the 4 in 47re and 48re means.



If the truck came with a HO it is a 48re. They did not put the 47re with the HO. If it is an SO, you have more checking to do to be sure. Look for the serial number on the left side of the transmission case, just above the oil pan gasket surface. The dealer should be able to confirm from that, what transmission you have.



If you paid for a 48re, and you have a 47re, tell them to replace the transmission. Hope this helps.

Then (also following up on DBVZ's post) your next best bet will be to check the Monroney Sticker (window sticker). Federal law mandates this be included with every new car and that it lists the equipment such as transmissions, engines, etc. I once did some research on the Monroney Sticker and found out that if you have a vehicle that was sent over from another dealer this sticker can sometimes be missing. Other than that, it's a crawl under the truck to check the number, as DBVZ said...

For the 3rd gens if you really want to know, remove the passenger side head lamp. On the fender rail right behind the lamp, there is a build plate for you truck. There are seven lines of information on the plate. Line #1 is the bottom line and line #7 is the top line. Lines 7,6, and 5 are not significant. It is line #4, the middle line that you need to identify the transmission. Look for digits 13, 14, and 15. The transmission codes are as follows:



DGP= 47RE

DG8= 48RE

When they say 800ft pounds for the 48RE this seems to be fine given motor with 555 ft pounds but what happens to the torque as it goes through the transmission. Is it multiplied and if so is an 800ft pound transmission strong enough. Perhaps 1000 would be better?
