Installing reman 7.3... any tips?

My friend owns A small towing company with 5 different tow wreckers. . His big "Super Yogi " semi tractor wrecker is A 1979 model I. H. , and he suspects that it is A " Triple Nickel " 555 Cummins under the hood . . How can I identify this motor correctly ? I haven't had A chance to go look at it yet. .

Thanks for any info. . Casey

Should have a tag on it like your 24v. does. Don't recall where it is on the engine exactly. Would probably be on the front timing cover. My uncle has had several of the them in his Versatile four-wheel drive tractors.

If it's a V8, it could be either a 555 or a 903. The 555's were in medium duty trucks rated about 180-200 HP and the 903s were in the heavy duty models with ratings in the 325-350 HP range. As stated in the above post, there should be a tag on it telling which engine and the HP rating; however, some owners have a bad habit of removing the tag for the CPL number to take with them to buy parts. What series International truck do you have? I could come closer to telling you which one it is if I knew the model series.

Neither engine was as reliable as the old Cummins NTC series inline 6 cylinders.

i was able to go and get A look at it yesterday. . The tag says that it is A 535 and it is A inline six. . The truck model is A 4300 series. . Thanks for the info. .

Hmmm... that's a new one on me and I've been around the binders(IH) trucks for 40 years! "535" sticker on an inline 6 Cummins in a 4300 Conventional??

How many cylinder heads can you see? What's the engine color?

Bill

The tag had been marked with one of those viberateing pens that you would use to mark car batteries , and tools, so it is real tuff to read it clearly. . The color is A dull tan . . And yes it is an inline six. The injector pump says cummins casted right on the side of the houseing. . Maybe I should run over there and take A picture of it. . I will call them up , and if they are around I will run over there. . Thanks again. .

If it's an NTC series Cummins, there will be 3 cylinder heads visible--one head for 2 cylinders. The intake manifold is one piece. The fuel pump is on the driver side and there no high pressure lines on it like your B5. 9. (The injectors are fired by lobes on the camshaft via a push rod. )

Yep, it sounds like someone took the factory tag off and never put it back on... or it's a reman engine block.
