i just got my autometer pyro gague and i want to install the sensor pre turbo. so what i need to know is how do i go about installing it? do i have to take the turbo off or just use lots of greese on the bit and tap? is there a "web" in the manafold that i need to stay away from or just drill it right in the center?

thanks for any info

yes there is a web I would reccommend that you pull the turbo becuase that way you can guarantee that you don't hit the web and you won't get metal shavings in the turbo. It takes about 20 minutes to pull the turbo.

I just received my Isspro pyrometer and boost gages yesterday.

I plan on installing the pyro probe after the turbo. I plan on using the pipe coupling supplied with probe and welding that onto the downpipe a couple of inches from the turbo outlet.

I want to mount it post turbo because I have a boat with a Cummins 270 and it will have a post turbo pyrometer this spring. This will make it easy for me to compare performance characteristics of the two engines. (all the marine data I've seen is post turbo).

If you are gonna BOMB your rig, I would recommend pre-turbo install of the pyro. The mathmatics are too hard to figure after the turbo to determine your redline. Post turbo redline temps are gonna be around 850-950° at peak torque and around 1000° at full RPM. Now I can't memorize the torque curve very well and the curve is gonna change with mods.

I installed the probe pre turbo without removing the turbo. I just used Nickel-antisiezure compound on the drill bit and the tap to trap the filings. The engine was too warm for grease at the time.

The instructions at the TST website, TST SITE

are right on with the location to avoid the center web.

i have the isspro ev's. i put a probe pre-turbo, and one post-turbo. ran the leads to a DP/DT switch, then to the amplifier. i can switch between pre and post, by throwing the switch. best i could tell, no significant effect on accuracy. i drilled both on the truck without trouble, with heavy grease, and patience.
