Cummins gurus,



First time Cummins owner and new TDR member... and excited as all get-out to be both, but mainly the first of course! :cool:



Anyway, I'm sure this has been asked before, but the search pulled up tons of results when searching on Limited Slip that didn't address my simple question. They mostly discussed rebuilding, types of, clutch packs, etc. My question is... do I have a Limited Slip rearend?



See my sig below for truck info. I am hoping someone can tell me if there is a VIN code or stamp on the Dana 80 that will tell me without a doubt. The "punch-it and look for two marks" method is not always accurate.



Sorry for asking such a newbie question, but I'm just not sure and I'm really hoping I do.

EDIT: I bought used so I don't have the original receipt of sale. Also, if I look on the axle (which I have done) or at some sticker somewhere on the truck, would it say "LSD" or just a code?

Did you buy new or used? Check the build sheet that was in the window if you bought new or in the bottom of the glove box I think you might find a sticker there with axle type. Not sure if it will tell you or not on that.
 
Mine has a little metal tab on one of the rear end cover bolts reminding me to use a Friction Modifier. Of course, another method would be to jack up one of the rear wheels and see how much fun it is to turn by hand. ;)
 
On my 95 there is a sheet on the bottom side of the hood with all the options listed as far as gear ratio, limited slip, etc.

Jack up the rear of the truck and put it in nuetral. Spin one rear tire. If the other tire spins the same direction, limited slip, if the other tire spins the opposite direction, open. Sometimes the other tire won't spin, this would also mean open.

VIN code to Dodge should reveal the build sheet. They should be able to tell you if you have any further trouble or cant determine.



Heck, I'd change the rear lube anyway since its used. Then you'll be for sure.

You have all given me several different options to accurately determine just what I have in the rear pumpkin. I especially enjoyed the Jesus conversation suggestion. ;)



The rear end definitely looks as if the previous owner drained and refilled with ??????. The liquid gasket material he used is on the outside edges of the cover. He evidently didn't put the tab back on either since none of the bolts have one hanging off. Since I bought it from a stealer, I will have to ask them to contact the previous owner while I'm there next time so I can ask a few questions.

Steve, if you are talking about the grey goop dripping all over, it is probably factory! For a nice little add-on, you might want to get a Mag-Hytec.
 
Hey Guys, if you are going to change the gear lube, just look inside the differencial carrier with the cover off! You might have to turn the drive shaft to get a good look inside, but when you look inside the big center piece with the ring gear on it, if you can see through it and there are only four gears inside, it is an open. If you can't see through it and you can't see any gears from the outside, it is a LSD. Most POSITIVE way to be sure!!!

Checked my glovebox sticker...

... and I don't have the "DSA" option listed. What I found in the glovebox was:



<b>DRL - Rear Axle - Dana 80 (Hyb</b>



There are other options listed, but that is all I have with the the "Rear Axle" in the description. Looks like I'm the owner of an open diff... bummer!!



BTW, what does the '(Hyb' part mean? It looks cut off, but did it stand for Hybrid? And hybrid of what?



Thanks again guys. The TDR comes thru again! Guess I'll be layin' only one black patch, should the need / desire arise.

As I understand it, our axles have a Dana 80 third member with Dana 70 axle shafts & tubes- thus "hybrid".
 
I had the same question, so I called up the Chrysler general service number (it was in the owners manual) and asked them. They not only anwered my question, but printed out and mailed to me several sheets that detailed all of the original equipment my truck came with.

Dude, its easier to just change out EVERYTHING. Change the oil, both diffs, transfer case, transmission, etc. That way YOU KNOW what is being used, not to mention what condition your equipment is in. I just changed all my fluids out and it ran me about $110 for everything I needed.



I added the friction lube (for LSDs) to both the front and rear diffs because it won't hurt them if you don't have them, but if you have them and don't use it, you'll end up w/ buttkiss. :eek:



Anyway, welcome to the TDR and maybe I'll drop you a line next time I'm headed up that way and we can have a cup of Joe and shoot the breeze.

Isn't a major part of this forum about modifying our trucks? Who is to say that the previous owner didn't modify his truck? The factory speck sheets would be fun to have and will almost always be right. Still, the only way to be sure of what you have is to check inside the differencial!!! You can pull the cover and change the oil and KNOW what you have in less time than it will take to track the information from the dealer or factory... and still not have a guarantee that someone hasn't changed something.



I agree that it would be a good idea to change all the fluids on a used truck so you know what you have. If you use "dino" oils instead of synthetics, it isn't expensive at all! Or, invest in the synthetics if you preferr.



The majority of new trucks have an open rear end. A LSD has never been offered as an option in the front end. While friction modifier won't hurt an open differencial, it is wasted money in an open. I give my truck ANYTHING it needs, but I am conservative enough that I don't like to waste my money.

hybrid axle from dana. Meaning it is a specialty piece that has a dana 80 center section and dana 70 axle tubes.



double check under the hood near the grille. sticker will say weather or not you have a limited-slip.
