My truck is all over the road. I "Searched" and found all kinds of possible problems. But how do I know what needs to be replaced or upgraded? Adjustable Track Bar, Ball Joints, DSS Steering Stabilizer, or just a simple alignment? I would hate to spend money on something I don't need. Any help, ideas, or info would be great. Thanks.

same problem

I had the same problem as you on my previous truck which was the same as yours. I had the DSS and the adjustable track bar from THUREN and it seemed to help a little. I also had a front end alignment done and i was maxed out on the specs. Every truck has its quirks. I had the front end leveled by a local shop and I think they did something wrong when they dropped the front axle. It was never straight going down the road after that unless i had my hands on the steering wheel at all times. Good luck on gettin 'er fixed.

You will see this statement used over and over but its where you should start... . Get under the front end and look for slop in each joint as someone turns the steering wheel back and forth. ANY slop in any joint could cause it to wander because our front ends are so heavy.

One spot to pay extra attention to is the track bar, especially the end on the drivers side attached to the frame. If you see any movement in that joint replace it. Also check the other end attached to the axle.

Yes it is frustrating and sometimes difficult to fix. Check to be sure your steering box is not a problem.

There is no easy answer to finding a solution for you. You must start searching for any play in any front end component. Even good alignment shops have trouble fixing this front end.

Good Luck,

Dave

About 5 years ago, I went through the same thing with my 96. I replaced the track bar, adjusted the steering box, and added the DSS. Made a huge difference... at the time.

Last week, I took the plunge, and put in a 3 turn steering box, and a non-adjustable 3rd gen track bar. Now it drives like my 3rd gen. It's the best it's ever driven, even new, other than it still needs new shocks. (And it now needs new front wheel bearings, but that's another story). :D

I would say, start with the track bar, especially since you have larger tires. As was suggested earlier, climb under it, and have someone turn the wheel while you watch all of the joints. Any play, in any of the joints will cause it to wander. Also, make sure your tires are aired up properly. That can also cause problems.
