I want to do the timing on my truck and do not know what tools I need. I looked in the snap on catalog and found part#sp500 timing gauge set, but the snap on guy said that was just an update for 2017dsp diesel service set which is about $1300. Can anyone tell me the cheapest an easiest was to get the tools and are the any diagrams or tech articles on how to do the timing. I want to do it myself.

Thank you, darin

I think the number you found for the Snap-on set it right. Don't let the rep fool you. You don't need a $1300 set, even from Snap-on. Miller also has a timing set that is very similar. They both work the same way.

Read this link for details on how to do it. Thought its written with a '94 in mind, the procedure is essentially the same for all P7100 trucks. Here is some additional info.

Take an afternoon and do some searching/reading here. Lots of info, but lots of non-essential comments as well.

You have the right number for the snap on kit. I just got my sp500 kit overnighted to my shop. I payed $240 because of the overnight shipping, but I belive it is around $200.

You are correct, and don't forget you need a barring tool. Snap-On #YA9565A

The timing kit cost me 205. 00, the barring tool cost 49. 40

Good luck, and thanks for links. I needed the info as well!!

Don't forget the bolt on the gear needs to be touqued to 144 ft lbs. Thats a fairly expensive torque wrench.

Don't buy the SPX Miller dial indicator. It's total garbage. Find another brand in metric or standard and convert to millimeters of lift. They want to much and theres to much drag in the mechanism. My fathers a machinist and couldn't believe how inaccurate it was. I sent mine right back. You'll need the ext tip for the dial ind and the adapter to mount it to the pump. These were of satisfactory quality. You may also want the thrust washer to aid in adjusting the pump. Snap-on has the SP500 timing kit for $205. 00. It even has the nice gear puller. The space to pull the gear on the pump is very tight. If you do look for a dial ind, look for a range of 30mm in . 01 increments or 1'' travel and . 001 increments in standard. Good luck.

My Snap-on timing kit works great. Just don't use the conversion chart in there though, it is not very detailed. Go to Piers or Fritz' website to get the info. Vaughn

I'm putting together a timing kit, and am reviewing dial indicators. The miller and snap on ones are WAY expensive. I've found several at various places that SHOULD fit the bill (summitracing, jegs, harborfreight, grainger and enco. ). They range from about $13 to around $60. That is vs. $179 at Snap-On. Two questions,

1. can I use one of these "cheap" ones?

2. Where to I get an extension for a dial indicator so that it will reach through the dv socket?

Thanks,

Andy

Andy,

I think Wade has a kit. I want to advance mine, too. Maybe we can borrow his or if you get yours together I could help you and do 'em together.

Last time I talked to Wade, his parts were scattered here and there. I was talking to Joe this morning, and he said he'd split the cost of the snap-on kit with me if we would keep it at his shop. That was an okay solution for me since I'm at his place frequently. I'm having so many other nit picky problems with this truck though, money for timing kits and adjustments will just have to wait.

If I can find a reasonably price dial indicator, I might be able to scrounge up cash for the kit for less than $100.

I'm all about getting together and figuring out how to set it ourselves. That's parta the reason we're all in this group. :)

I think I've got a radiator leak now... on top of all that other crap you already know about. :(

I bought the $40. 00 puller a few years ago and added two washers to the bolts because they are too long. I've set timing the non-technical way about 30 times or so.
