My 2nd gen (2001 QC SB AT) is idling in park at about 825+ according to the tach. Is that a little high? When I put it in gear it bumps the auto trans hard, in both forward and reverse.

Should I adjust it speed down? Next question is how?

I attempted to adjust the idle speed at the linkage under the plastic cover and it had no effect. Still idles at 825 or higher. Backing out on the Torx-20 screw did not adjust idle speed down because it backed out of the way before the accelerator link lowered the speed, so I must be doing something wrong.

Can anybody give me the correct way to adj the idle? I’m getting tired of that jerk when I go into gear. Thanks for any help. I’m out of answers and I hate to pay a dealer to tell me how dumb I am. I’d rather hear that here.

Many thanks

Hi Tim, there is no setting for idle speed, it is controlled by the computer. 825 sounds about right. One thing you might try is disconnecting both batteries for a couple hours, then after you reconnect them turn on the key (without starting) and slowly and smoothly push the throttle to the floor and back 3 times. This is to relearn the throttle position sensor. Might give it a try.

If your truck is clunking or making a heaving bump when you put it into gear mabye one of your motor mounts has a problem, or there is too much slack in your rear axle.

OK batteries disconnected and on the clock. I'll give it a try.

The bump bumping "feels" to me like too many rpms to the drive shaft when going from neutral to D. It feels like someone bumped me from the rear just slightly and likewise when I go to reverse. I dont suspect a motor mount because when I rev it up the motor stays put, cant see any movement. Ujoints sound OK and the rear axle does also.

Please let me confess that this is my first CTD and I've had it less than a week. So the bumping on going to D may be normal and the problem is with me not knowing what to expect. I went from a 01 Yukon Xl to a 01 24v both with AT. Is a little "going to D" bump within normal for a CTD?

If I can't adjust the idle I wouldn't have known unless yall told me. I'm a newbie to diesels and Dodges.

Thanks

Tim

The Cummins engines make more power at idle than a 350 or 6. 0L V-8 makes. If nothing is loose or clunking, you are probably fine.

Is the transmission a stock unit, or has it been modified at all? A stocker still pulls on the engine when put into gear, but not as much as having a tighter aftermarket torque convertor. Big difference my new transmission over the stocker I had.

No problem. That is what this site is here for. :)

www.dodgeram.org has a LOT of great tech info on it also.
