My parking brake will not hold truck and I can not figure out a way to adjust,

Surely there must be a way to do it. Any advice

Dave :) :) :)

I assume that on a truck with rear disk there is a star wheel adjuster on the parking brake shoes, it would be accessed through an oblong hole in the backing plate and it should have a plug in the hole. Jack up the rear of your truck and then remove the plug and use a screwdriver to turn the star wheel as you rotate the tire until you start to hear some contact. Reinstall the plug and do the other side. After this has been done check to see how well they hold. If the parking brake peddle still goes down quite a ways there is an adjuster under the front end of the bed on the drivers side were cable slack can be taken up.

I have never seen a star wheel adjuster on Disc brakes before but I will check it out to be sure. There is an adjustment on one brake cable to one wheel but thats not satisfactory. Any further ideas would be appreciated.

Dave

Your truck has a drum parking brake inside the disks. Follow the cable to the wheel and you'll see what Kevin is talking about. His directions are spot-on. The adjuster you found on the cable is just for taking slack out of the cable after the drums have been properly adjusted.

Boy you guys are right on. I just checked and there is adjustment star wheels.

the one on the left side is on top and hard to spot. Now if I can just figure which way to turn them to tighten. Any ideas on that.

Dave

The star wheels usually turn easily one way, this adjusts the shoes outward, thus tighten the brakes. Difficult to adjust the other direction as a 'arm' lays across the star wheel preventing it from rotating the other direction. The arm can be lifted using a small screwdriver if you tighten them to far.

ALLRIGHT YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST. You are right they turn easy one way but you cant see in there very good to even see if they are in fact turning but I have a parking brake again. It has been awhile since I could count on them holding if needed. It is supposed to get 107 degrees here today so wanted to get done this AM before too hot. Yippee I made it :D :D :D :D
