I just put in my 5" exhaust, and the thing spools up the turbo right away. :D (Holset HX-35). Now I would like to adjust the boost to about 30-35 pounds. I will be installing my new injectors sometime in the next couple of weeks, so I would like to kick up the boost when I put in the injectors. Pictures are best when explaining how to do this, because I am a visual type person, but I can live without them if necessary. Thanks, Andy W.

Do you have a " boost fooler" ? Or a box?

The boost is limited by the waistegate to low 20's so that will need attention, either by some adjustment or an external spring.

The more boost you run the more back pressure you have. Only need enough to clean up the smoke.

Also, boost is generated by heat, so the bigger injectors will cause it to happen after the above is attended to.

I don't have a boost fooler, or any electronic add-ons. I have built gas race cars for years, but not diesels. I'm not too familiar with turbos. I also need some good gauges. Which springs are you talking about?

First off... Get gauges!!! Now to answer your questions. With the HX35, you can install a restriction in the "boost elbow" that the rubber hose attaches to at the turbo. This will restrict the pressure that goes to the wastegate, causing the wastegate to open later. Someone has adjustable boost elbows for sale in the classified section, and on ebay as well.

Now the problem. The ECM on the Cummins will de-fuel (cut back on the fuel), when it sees boost over about 22 psi. This is the reason for a "boost fooler", or an electronic box such as the edge ez or edge comp. These boxes fool the ECM to only thinking that it has about 22psi, so that it won't defuel, and won't set an over boost code. If you leave the wastegate alone and put in SMALL injectors you probably will be okay, except that you will be increasing the EGT's (did I mention that you need gauges?).

There is a listing in the FAQ's that gives a recommended order to "Bomb" your truck. You probably should check that out. The most important thing is have fun! Oo.

Thank you guys for your help. My original goal was to get to about 400 HP without a box, but I guess that isn't going to happen. I didn't know it was controlled that much by the computer. I'm working on getting a set of guages, but I've run out of money for now. There may be a box in the future for me too.

Please Mr Lockguy don,t be tempted by this foolishness. Don't go down this slippery slope. I lived this nightmare of finding more power. What a foolish notion, make a heavy diesel truck go faster. It will start with gauges, then it will progress to fueling box, from there you'll need a bigger faster spooling turbocharger. Injectors and a 4in exhaust will be next. You'll be lulled to thinking wow this truck runs so sweet. After putting your foot into the accelerator a few to many times, to feel the torque set you back in your seat. You notice the trans was'nt as firm as it used to be. So here is the phone number now 8665044002 store it in you speed dial. Once the transmission can handle the power you will be lulled again into wanting just a little bit more, thats when you go for some bigger injectors. Now you are close to 500 horsepower. As you cruise around enjoying all that power, you notice a faint mist on your windshield, you proceed to turn on your wipers, and a gooey mess smears all over almost blinding you . After the head gasket gets repaired. Get ready for twins. Its a blast enjoy the ride. Merv

I really don't want to go too far with it, just enough to say "I can build up a diesel too". Like I said before, I have built many gas engines, but not diesels. All these things are very tempting, but I want it to last me a while. That was the reason for buying a CTD in the first place. Thanks, Andy W.

andy, come on out to big nw bash in enumclaw, mid february. you will see a wide variety of set ups. You need to ride in a catcher truck :D

welcome
