Is there a simple way to check and replace the fan clutch or is it something that the dealership will have to do? My engine temps are getting higher then they should. I'm almost certain that the fan clutch is the culprit according to some other threads I've read recently. TIA

Clayton-

Did you break the input shaft for the fan clutch too?? :D

Seriously, though, what temps are you getting? (Are you getting them from the Attitude display?)

Edit: here's a recent post on the 2nd gen forum:

Probably with my luck :-laf

My temps are getting up to 230+ on steep grades. That's what it says on the attitude when my father in law is running just above 200 up the same hills. His truck is a 2004. I'll have to see if I can diagnose it and fix it.

Don't forget that the vistronic fan is pulse width modulated by the ECM and needs that signal for engagement. A tech with a factory DRBIII scan tool can turn on and off the fan for testing in addition to monitor its engagement under those heated conditions.

Mine was replaced today. Dealer wanted to charge me $309 for the fan clutch and another $40 to put it on. I said no way, it is under warranty! After a little discussion they did cover it under warranty.

You can do it, Clayton... shouldn't be hard. But check your thermostat, too! Could be stuck closed.

If you need help from the manual and don't have it, PM me.

I just went to the dealership to see if they would hook up the DRBIII and do some test to see if it's my fan clutch and or thermostat that's giving my engine temps a roller coaster ride. Service tech told me to go and spray out all the radiators front and back real good and that should do it. If not then to come back  How hard would it of been to hook it up real quick and test it. So I guess I'll try spraying it down real good and see if that helps. I'll do some heavy towing up some good grades this weekend so I'll be able to report back if it worked or even helped out at all.

Hey Big Bob... didn't the dealer know that 479 rwhp in the Ghost spun that fan to death? :). George

I would clean the radiator out first. My 2001 got to overheating and it was the radiator had clogged dirt and oil. A good blowing out with an air hose made all the difference in the world.

Well got back from my trip yesterday while towing 12k up some good grades and I have to say that my engine temps didn't get as hot. I'll try spraying the radiators out even better to see if that helps out more. But my temps didn't get hotter the 215 this time when before it would go clear up to 230+. When I sprayed them out you could see a lot of dirty water coming out of the bottom.
