How do you "Name" a trailer?

Okay, I have looked EVERYWHERE and still can't find out how to give a trailer a name.

I have the factory-installed Integrated Trailer Brake Controller and the 8.4AN radio. I can select from four different basic trailer options. The screen gives me the option to "Use this trailer". I read in TDR #105, page 86, that I should be able to give a name to each of those selections, I think. Or maybe I'm supposed to add a named trailer to the list. I don't know.

I tried to find the procedure within the 600+ pages of my owner's manual but so far have had no luck there. I asked the service manager at the dealership where I bought the truck and he was also clueless. I searched these forums with no luck.

Does anyone here actually know how to do this? I'll settle for good guesses from you knowledgeable people. You've helped me out in the past. I need it again, please.

What year truck? I'm not sure on 19+ but 18- doesn't support it by default. You have to enable using alfaodb before it is available.

The owners manual and the dash don’t match with the 8.4, and the dealerships can’t do anything about it. Personally I think it was an oversight and FCA doesn’t want to fix it as the non-8.4’s get the option.

It’s a possibility but it has to be enabled with something like AlfaOBD.

Does this mean that I am just up the creek on naming a trailer or can someone enable it for my truck? I'm not familiar with the AlfaOBD. Is it something the dealer will have and can they enable it?

2016 you will need to enable using AlfaOBD. Dealers normally don't have AlfaOBD and they have been pretty much locked down from making any "non-standard" changes.

AlfaOBD can be downloaded from the Google Play store for android or from the AlfaOBD website for Windows. You will need a OBD dongle, Obdlink MX or MX+ are the recommended models.

The dealer will likely not be able to do anything for you.

You could find someone with AlfaOBD or buy it yourself.

I'm in Rising Sun, Indiana. It's about an hour's drive from Cincinnati, OH.

While I would like to be able to name my trailers, I'm not going to spend any money to do it. I thought that there was some menu on my screen that I couldn't figure out how to use, and that someone like you guys would be able to tell me what I was doing wrong. I guess it's more complicated than that and I'll probably just let it drop. The next time I attend a TDR function (I was at the Cummins plant a year ago) I'll see if I can find someone who can set this up for me.

Thanks again for all the info. At least I now know that I'm not a total moron for being unable to get to the right screen.
