Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) How do you reset the TPS cable? I can't get the transmission to downshift up a steep hill.

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) "passing gear" ?

I'm trying to reset my TPS cable to my auto transmission. When going up steep hills pulling my boat, I need a lower gear to shift to. This is usually due to slower Fords in front of me. LOL My transmission will stay in OD if I don't push the button to release it. My truck just lugs down to say 1100 RPMS and I must release overdrive to save it all. Is the TPS cable the part that downnshifts it to what I used to call passing gear? How exactly do you set it? I read the manual but i don't see any adjustments. My Durango will downshift without me doing anything. Thanks for any help. Herb

This is a TPS issue.
OD is controlled by the computer not the Throttle valve ( kick-down) cable.
Replace or do a search on the 'TPS' or throttle positsion sensor in the 12 valve section.

Herb - Has it always behaved this way or is this something new? My 97 has never downshifted to third when it should've, even at full throttle. It will lug down in OD until the bitter end and then *finally* downshift to third. It was that way when I acquired it with 55k on it and still that way at 187k. In between I've had a full DTT rebuild and a new TPS sensor (all done for other reasons) and it still behaves the same way. My understanding is that the OD shift is controlled (poorly) by the PCM and you'll need to find a workaround to that. I think there are some who've done some homegrown rheostat setups and I think ATS sells a module that works similarly. As for me, I've just gotten used to stabbing the OD lockout button on the dash when needed.

I'm not sure you've got a "problem", just a 47RE. ;-)

Grant,
Hi. I've had this problem since I bought it at 34,000 miles nine and a half years ago. I have now an upgraded transmission with billet torque converter. Nothing different going uphill. It will lug down below 1000 RPMS without me kicking it down out of overdrive. Just find it annoying when my Durango pulls the boat better up the hill. Thanks. I have a number eight plate and without load I can go up any hill in OD unless I see the transmission temp or pyrometer going up too much. I have 128K miles now. Herb
