(Posting in the right forum, this time.)

Hi all. For those that bumper pull, especially in remote areas, how do you have your bed set up? Obviously the way one will setup for a 5er is very different, but I'll be doing a bumper pull so have the full bed free.

I'm especially interested in where and how you carry your second spare, long range tank, generator, etc. If you carry a second spare, do you still have a tonneau cover, cargo slide, etc? We'll be having an auxiliary battery for car fridge, radios etc - I'm thinking it can live in a battery box in the bed rather than taking up rambox space.

Any photos of your setup would be handy.

Thanks

Hi Matt. Not much to add here. I have about the same truck, minus the 4x4, with the spare tires ON the ground, <G>. Sure not much space in the back, expecially with the RamBox. I put in a 50 gal TransferFlo tank, thus shortening the bed further, but the trailer has an Onan in it, and is a toy hauler for all the junk that doesn't fit the truck bed. You can probably stuff a lot into the RamBox and have it protected from the elephants. Good travels sound like are in the making! Do keep us informed!

I have a cap-high camper top. I'm sure my camping is much different than yours. We did boon-dock for several days last week at the Bob Evans Farm Fall Festival and stayed quite comfortable.
I have a short bed truck but I took extra water, tiny generator, gasoline, leveling blocks, firewood, 12 x 12 pop up canopy because of impending rain, tarps to walk on to keep us out of the mud, two tool boxes, coleman lanterns and other stuff. The trailer and truck both have spare tires up underneath.

Not sure we can really help you much as we don't travel in your kind of "wilderness" but I have a 12KW Onan QD generator mounted in the bed, along with (2) 4 foot long 8" wide boards that I can use as blocking under both wheels, or walk on planks if it's muddy. I also carry 100 gallon Transfer Flow for extended range, and (4) 10" long 2" X 8" wood blocks. I also carry a bucket with a long handle brush and windshild squeegee/bug scrubber sponge and a couple of 50' garden hoses. I also have my sewer hose in the back of my truck as my bumper pull trailer doesn't have an adequate storage compartment for the hose. I've always thought about getting a fresh water bladder, but, so far have never needed it (but I do have the ability to pump water out of it if I ever needed to along with me). As far as spares go, I have one for the trailer and one for the truck both located in the OEM position underneath. I hauled extra spares all the way to Alaska and back in 1991 and never needed them. I think one spare for each vehicle is enough for my kind of traveling. All this being said, we don't travel down there in the outback, so this may not apply to the traveling you do. I'll try to get a picture next time I'm all loaded up to go somewhere. Ken Irwin
