how do you use overdrive

I have a 93 250 ram diesel, and I was told that when I start my engine I should take the overdrive off until I reach about 45 mph then push the button in and it will shift into the 4th gear. So is that good advice and also when pulling my boat over steep passes is it ok to leave the overdrive off and cruize at 50 mph on steep grades? Thanks

when I had my first gen I did not worry about taking it out of overdrive unless you are pulling a good sized load and the trans is hunting between gears . I would say drive it and if you start dropping mph going up a hill then I would hit the od button other then that don't worry about it . when it is cold it will not shift to od till it is warm anyway .
