So how efficient are the factory trany coolers on the side of the engine block? I'm pulling my trany out to do a Sun Coast rebuild and noticed the trany line running under the trany to the other side of the block to that funky looking cooler. I'm thinking of getting rid of that cooler and running the line back (on the same side as the rest of the trany stuff) to an aftermarket cooler with a fan. Have any of you guys done this? Which cooler set-ups have you guys seen to work best?

There was a post about a year ago where a member removed the oem cooler and replaced it with a fan cooler unit and had heat problems. If you feel you need more cooling, mount your after-market cooler in series with the oem. On my 02 the cooler is mounted in front of the inter cooler , on the drivers side. It must be pretty good as I have 200,000 plus with no transmission problems.

The previous owner of my truck thought it was smart to remove the cooler that exchanges with engine coolant(the one of hte pass. side under the exhaust manifold), and run only an aftermarket air cooler. He couldn't figure out why it kept roasting transmissions, and why I had to replace the transmission 30miles down the road. This is on a bone stock engine. If you want more cooling don't un-hook what the factory put there, just add to it.
