Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) How hard is a cam?

I have a custom ground marine cam that had the weld on the gear break. The nose on the marine cam is short enough to only go about halfway through the cam gear. I've got a new gear and want to know if the cam is to hard to tap and thread the 9/16" hole in the nose.
