How hard is it to swap a stock HY35 to a Piers HX40?

I know the output size of the hx40 is 4" and changing the stock exhaust to a 4" when you make the turbo swap is a good idea, and I will do that.



I think they make a 4" turbine outlet pipe for the HX40, but most of the 4" exhaust kits have the necked down turbo outlet pipe. Do they make a 4" exhaust that will mate to the HX40 directly?



How hard is it to swap the HY35 to a HX40? Just the obvious exhaust manifold bolts? How does the HX40 hang?



What about the oil line supply? What about the oil line return to the engine? What about wastegate? Where would you put a post turbo pyrometer?, and a C clamp type or a 1/8" threaded type and where?



My boost gauge goes to 50psi so that should not be a problem

Bob, Piers' Hx40 does come with a 4" downpipe and clamp, as a kit. You have the option of ordering it without, if you're installing a complete 4" system, as Pinnacle Performance and other exhaust manufacturers do have the 4" downpipe option in their kits.

Pre-turbo is the best option for a pyro install, drilling and tapping the exhaust manifold, but you can take the down pipe to any welding or machine shop, and have them weld a 1/8 NPT or 1/4 NPT bung in the down pipe, so you can thread the probe in there.

My buddy just bought one of those K-45 turbos from Kurt. It bolts right up to your stock exhaust. Suppose to be a mean machine! I cant wait to see how it works. . With going this route we also did have to worry about the exhuast.

The HX45 might be the correct turbo for xxx HP. I am looking to do 400 HP and understand the Piers HX40 works well in the 350 - 450 HP range.



I am trying to get the right match of turbo, 400 HP, fueling, transmission, and since everything I can read is to do "air" first, then transmission, then fuel, I'm trying to get the "air" figuered out.



As I understand the HX45 the outlet to the exhaust is the same as the HY35 and HX35. I think the HX40 will do what I want and not have the restriction (which probably really is not significant anyway). Just a nice full flow turbine in the hp range I want.

You seem to imply that I can order an exhaust that will mate to the HX40 downpipe directly. Am I reading you right? I want to put SS band clamps on the exhaust joints instead of the C clamp type, which also means I need the hangers welded to the exhaust pipe and not use the C clamps as hangers.





Eventually I am going to put a USGear D-Celerator in the exhaust system.

When I swapped the HX-35 for an HX40 on my truck all I did was change the down pipe and bolt up the turbo. All the oil lines and such lined right up. The hardest part was changing the down pipe in my 4" system, tool a terrible amount beating with a hammer. The other PITA where the bolts that held the turbo to the manifold, I could not get them loose. I ended up taking the manifold and turbo out as one piece and seperating them on the ground. That was okay cause I gave the manifold a coating of high temp BBQ paint while I was at it.

Bob, I meant that most exhaust systems come with your option of either size downpipe. The one that bolts to the Hx35, or the one that bolts to the Hx40, your choice. The rest of the system is the same. Piers supplies the downpipe with his Hx40 turbo, you can simply tell him to delete it when buying an entire 4" exhaust system. I agree about the U-bolt clamps you're talking about, band clamps are a better choice, especially in the first two pipe joints, which can be critical when you need to get the system apart for whatever reason.

The K-45 will handle 450 hp and then wastegate it and it will run a little higher. And this is with the direct bolt up exhaust elbow. .
