Should be getting my new VP-44 in shortly and was wondering how hard it is to replace. Should I buy a service manual and just do it, or is it worth it just to pay a knowledgable diesel mechanic and get it done with? I will also be installing a set of DD2's at the same time. I know I can install the injectors, just not real sure about the VP-44. Anyone around the Houston area want to help an aspiring DieselHead out?

Thanks guys,

It's not too bad to install. I did my first vp44 in 4 hours. Someone gave me some good advice to take off the injector lines in 2 sets of three which helped out a bunch. Also go ahead and take off the TPS module. It is easy to take off and is very difficult to work around. Make sure you spin the keyway of the vp 44 to the top position before you remove it, this way the key of the new pump will be on the top thus making is "LESS LIKELY" to fall into the timing gear area. If I remember corectly, I uused the air horn bolts to thread into the VP44 gear to press it off the old pump.

Hope this helps,

Tim

Aaron,

Here's a photo overview of the VP44 replacement that I did for a friend this past summer. It is by no means complete, but it will give you a pretty good idea of what's involved. It sure will be easy to install your DD2's with everything removed.

Hope this helps.

Take the VP44 gear TDC mark/line to the 7 O' Clock position.

Then your pump key will be in the TDC position and less likely to fall down into your gear case.

Buy a Cummins 24 valve tech manual for the best info--worth the investment.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like myself and a buddy will be attempting this swap pretty soon. I figure between the service manual and Kent's writeup it can't be too hard. If nothing else it is a money saving learning experience. Thanks again for all the tips guys.

While you are in there

Check the Tappet cover gasket for seapage. If it is leaking at all, you might want to replace it, so you don't have to do the whole job again.

Changing the VP44 is not that tough. Just take your time and use the manual.
