Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Problems after ATS install!

The other day I noticed my fuel shutoff solenoid was pretty darn hot after running a short while. I was wondering if this is normal. After a short drive my solenoid was so hot it was barely comfortable to lay the palm of my hand on it. The heat was definitely not from the engine as the rest of the fuel pump was not nearly as hot. I'm wondering if this is normal or if my starter is shot and causing the problem. Thanks for any light you can shed.

Griff,

Coincidence?

For some unknown reason after I pulled into the garage last night I opened the hood... probably just to have one final gaze at the Mighty Cummins for the day. Anyway, while I was appreciating how clean and shiny everything in the engine compartment was I noticed that the black top of the shut-off solenoid was covered with a fine layer of DUST!

Compulsive as I am and not having a rag handy at the moment, I reached in and rubbed the dust off with my thumb. The fuel shut-off solenoid was warm to the touch - not at all hot, just warm.

I have no idea what's "normal" but that's my $. 02.

BTW, heads up for you younger Rammers, this is one of the things you do for thrills on a Friday night after you hit 50. :D

Check to see if the fuel solenoid relay is bad and sticking. It could also be the starter contacts, but if the starter was not continueing to run after the start it is probably ok.

Some of use knocking of 40's door do this very same thing but it to see if anything is bleeding, mines not a show truck.

Hey Jim -

Mine's no show truck either - got a dent in the rear qtr that's been waiting to get fixed for 3 years and the truck hasn't been washed in 6 months - maybe tomorrow. I do like to keep stuff clean under the hood 'cause it's less messy to work on. Despite the fact that I'm a little compulsive, that it looks real nice is truly a fringe benefit.

Heck, I'm nowhere near 40 or 50 and I have been known to spend a lot of quality time with my trucks. :D

Matt - has a GF jealous of the trucks.
