Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) how hot is to hot of egt

I know you are not supposed to go over 1250 deg. before turbo. My friends say it is ok for a little bit. I just put a #10 in my truck full forward, i have a plugged wastegate, k&n air, couple of turns on the gov. spring, and annorod adjusted, stock timing. It is a 97 4x4 3/4 ext. 5-spd. This is the problem when i am running hard through the gears it gets hot, mainly in 4th it will reach 1500 before it hits 3,000 rpm. Is it ok to get that hot just for a few seconds till i back off somewhere up in 5th gear if so how long should be ok? It will be hard to back off if I am next to a powerstroke

And how long and hot is ok when pulling a trailer up a hill "not many in ohio"

You have a strong Injection pump on your truck. Consider yourself lucky.



Things to consider to help reduce EGT:



A Mega-Cannon or Scotty type air filter



Advance timing to 15º BTDC (Conservative)



Lose the Cat



Full 4" exhaust (or 5" ,it might be cheaper)



A 16cm² Turbo exhaust housing. Or better yet a PDR prepped HX40 Turbocharger

I wouldn't do it for more than 10-15 seconds. An AFE mega-cannon or Scotty II air filter, and a 16 cm housing will go a long way toward lowering EGT's. Don't pull any big hills towing with those kinds of temps. Advancing the timing will help, also, but I can't confirm that. I haven't done mine, yet. A valet switch will make a huge difference, also, especially when towing.

Timing will drop youre Egts the most. I spoke with Piers thay sugested 15. 5 and that is what im running. If I were you I would just spend the money on the hx 40 that shoulde help also. That and a new cam are on my wish list. I also tow with it often I just dont lay my foot down. It works great and I must say I love my #10!!! Good Luck!

Those temps will get you in trouble I know been there done that I do not exceed 1200 ever I just do not do it. and no one should if they want there Cummins to last!

Mine lasted over 420k going over 1350* every day.

I have had mine up to 1250 or so pulling a long grade. Not sure how long I left it at that temp.



What would be some of the signs that would tell you that damage has been done to the motor?



Would you notice a big change in the way the engine runs or is it a gradual wear out.
