I saw a post about how to get the rotor off... ... ... YA wedge a extention behind the rotor on the bolt start the truck turn the wheel and PRESTO the rotor comes off... ... ... ... . YA all i got was a bent snap-on extention SO how do you get the rotor off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#@$%! Thanks If anyone can call me that would be great. (509)220-2676

must be difference on a 2001, my rotor literally fell off on my foot while I changed the front brakes.



Is there any kind of clip on the studs? My 1500 had small star type clips that I had to cut to get the rotor off.



Is there any kind of bolt visible from the front? like a spindle or hub bolt?



Could it be really rusted on?



I thought that I had read that front rotors on like 2000 and earlier were a pain to get off.

PS I did some searching here on TDR and found a bunch of reading on removing rotors on late 90's trucks. Too much info for me to add it here, but if you do a search there are some very good threads, some with pics and step by step instructions. Hope this helps

the extension on the bolt worked for me before I knew that trick I unbolted the ball joints and let it drop the inch or so before the axle stopped it then cut the joints with a torch. Used a press to seperate the bearing from the knuckle


If you turn it to far it will cock the bearing and bend the extension... I did that too!
reposition the extension / socket diagonally across from where you did the first one
 
I now got to the point of using a 10 lb sludge hammer at full swing NO luck 4 bolts in the back and 1 axle nut. The guy at napa said remove the nuts from the ball joints, steering knuckle and drop in down..... How does that work both studs point up, now the universal joint is in the way WOW I should have taken this to a shop. I think i am doing more damage than good. The rotor i was going to replace anyway, so i dont care if i mess that up. but what else can i mess up trying to get this apart
 
On a 2x4 you could drop it off by removing the ball joint nuts on a 4x4 you have to cut the ball joints. You can try heating the knuckle where it meets the bearing hub but it may weaken it I'm not sure. If you got a torch handy just smoke off the ball joints
 
What are you trying to change just the rotors or the bearings too. If just the rotor you may be able to cheat by knocking the lug nuts in a getting the rotor off of the bearing
 
after you cut the joints you can take off the knuckle and use a press to push out the hub put in new ball joints and re assemble as usual. When you cut the ball joint you are cutting the "shaft?" The stud that the nut goes on if you take the nuts off you should have about an 3/4" of clearance between the knuckle and the axle housing. do not cut the knuckle or housing.
 
I removed the spindle nut first with the wheel on the ground then I removed the caliper then the nuts holding the axle bearing assembly to the knuckle. Then I had to drive out all the wheel bolts with the bearing assembly off the truck. The rotor should now be free. As an aside I had to rent a 3/4" impact wrench to get the spindle nut off. I also re-installed the wheel bolts with a press and then gave them a good hard whack with a big hammer to set them. Luck
