I have about 70K miles on Bilsteins and think it may be time for some new ones. What is a good way to test them? It's hard to tell since the change in ride is so gradual. Thanks for any opinions.

My family has always checked the shocks by pushing the car/truck down on the bumper, and if the vehicle takes more than one bounce to right itself, stop bouncing, the shocks need replacing. Of course there is always the expansion joint on the highway that makes you feel sick to your stomach, because your bouncing up and down so much :)

Hope this helps!

Tom,

No good way to test them other than the seat of your pants. Nobody makes a shock that will last much more than 50K miles imo. They may still have some damping in them, but that nice ride is gone ;)

The bounce test seems to work on every other vehicle but ours... these Dodges have stiff heavy suspension that makes it hard for a couple of hundred or so pounds to "bounce" the truck.

The best test seems to be the seat of pants how does the truck recover from a road dip/bounce... if it feels like its going to keep going into the dip, get new shocks.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll go ahead and replace them. It just seem like the wheels bounce more when you hit a pothole and feel looser. It would be hard to determine if they are defective enough to be replaced under warranty. Where's the best place to buy?
