With all of the lift pump failures, I was wondering how many members have had Injection pump failures and at what mileage it went out? Also If it was not under warranty, what did it cost to have it fixed?

Mine went out around 75-80K (Somewhere there,, didn't keep record)

Dealer invoice for warrenty repair showed to be about $5K (or was it $7K?) It was wayyy to much, but anyway, I only had gauges on my truck at the time so all warrenty was still valid.

P. S. at 75K when I checked the lift pump pressure, it was Dead. (0PSI)

Did you ever run out of fuel before this happened? How low on fuel have you run the truck before filling? Talked to a tech and he said running out of fuel will kill a lift pump and running low on fuel will wear them out real fast. running out of fuel will also damage the injection pump. I am not saying that this happened to you but I was just wondering if it had since you are the only one that has posted with a failed injection pump and you also had a dead lift pump.

I have 86,000 on my 01, and no problems at all. I'm saying my $$$ to have my transmission upgraded at Bill K's, along with some new injectors.

Hammersley...

You must be on the road 24/7 to rack up 86,000 in a year! That's over 200mi every single day of the year! You must have one heck of a commute... .

Injection pumps can be had for $1100. Dodge dealers overcharge on ALL parts, even the warranty fixes.

Mine has survived 71,000 miles, fuel starvation, a Van Aaken, an EZ Edge, a PowerEdge, a TST Powermax3 Competition(set to a "pump-killer" duty cycle of 65% for months, but now set at 60%) and a Blue Chip box set at 63%. Survived all that. It survived thousands of miles on the first dead lift pump. It survived driving on a dead lift pump 90 miles to Cummins in Louisville to pick up another lift pump.

Big Toy, you're worrying too much about lift pump and injection pump failures. A few simple precautions (gauges) is all that is necessary. Plenty of help available, if and when a problem does hit...

Only commute 30 miles Round/trip - but my truck has been in 29 states, 7 Canadian provinces, the arctic circle and 3 states in old Mexico.

I don't know Briar...

the '98. 5 and early '99 VP44s had more than their fair share of early deaths. (hey, where's that skull and cross bones smiley when you need it? lol)

I'll see soon enough with my '98. 5 VP44!

:--)

1. Not that I recall.

2. Usually around 1/4 tank.

We towed in 4th gear at 2,700RPM everysingle day,, or empty in 5th gear at 2,100RPM.

Big Toy: I had to replace both lift and injector pumps at the same time (around 80K miles) on my 98. 5 3500. All under warrantee, total combined bill $50. 00. HOWEVER, the dealer doing the work ground both batteries into the dirt and wanted me to buy new ones from them. I decided to install the new Optima batteries myself. Batteries cost $316. 00 total. I think I still got a good deal. Dealer and D/C both raised a big stink when I required the new style lift pump. They wanted to know how I knew about it already. I simply printed off the TDR listing showing the D/C number and the Cummins Number and that seemed to end the discussion. My invoice showed the correct part number, but I will probably never know if I really got the new lift pump.

mine went out at 75,000 miles (20,000 w/hot PE) got one est. at $7,200, other at $4,500. changed it myself. Bought brand new VP44 from Auto-Wurks Diesel for $1,350

Mine went out at 42,000. 1998. 5 with banks stinger for last 20K My pump siezed. I was full throttle till 70 mph then i lifted quickly to avoid a car pulling out. That was it for the pump. Side note, i had about 5 gallons of jet fuel mixed with diesel in the tank at the time. Maby less lubrication? Dealer replaced under warrenty. They also found the lift pump bad. Now that i have added a blue box and some more mods it is good to hear that i can buy one for a little over a grand. not 5 grand!

the pump has a keyway, but that has to go in the right way (arrow pointing towards the pump) when you remove the pump. the pump is pulled off the gear, not the gear off the pump. gear stays in the gear housing. that's the extent of the pump timing all other fuel adjustments and timimg are made by the ECM

I'm pretty new to all this, but does what you're all saying mean the lift pump and VP44 are covered under the 5/100,000 standard warranty?

they are covered if your truck is "stock". it would take me two days to take all the stuff off my truck. but i new that if i put a hot PE and propane and other fun stuff that i would be my own warranty.
