I was at a dealer recently and they had two 05's waiting on engines. The service guy said that they were on back order and all of the dodge/cummins depots were out. He said it might take over a month to get the first one. By the way both trucks had injector failures. With all the depots out and on back order it seems quite a few engines have been replaced.

The last 2 members had theirs rebuilt by Scheid if I remember correctly.

Do a search on their user names and you'll find the details!

We've replaced a couple here. We have a guy that has a whole warehouse full of them for around $6500 shipped. If you know of anyone that needs one let me know.

SLJolley,

I totally believe you. My diesel mechanic quoted me the same price and also said that quantity is plentiful. I think Dodge must have some constraints on who they can purchase from. Just doesn't seem like an engine that is in many different machines would be hard to find.

Had a new short block at 36k. Truck now sounds worse than ever. I think they did it because they couldn’t find the problem. Well, it's still there. Obviously it wasn’t the engine. I think it’s the fuel injection system. Just had it back in there again and they did not see a big enough problem with it to fix. The comment was “it still has the Cummins warranty, drive it till its broke”. It’s great that it still has the warranty but it doesn’t help me when I’m broken down 400 miles from home with my trailer in tow. #@$%!

There is new 250hp units for $4800 on ebay.

Also 305hp units for $5400 on ebay.

$6500 is a little high if you ask me.

That's true. Now if I just had $5400 laying around I would have another Cummins in my garage.

I was really wondering how many have had engine problems with 4. 5-05's. This was a small dealer and just seemed strange they have two 05's with less than 50k needing engines. I know there is a problem with the injectors because I had two of mine replaced recently and they were on back order.

Man the way my girlfriend likes to spend my money on furniture, I could get another Cummins to sit in my kitchen and put a glass top on it as a kitchen table :-laf

I know at least one of those was heat related, too much fuel not enough turbo(s). Wouldn't exactly call it an "engine failure".

You might be a CTD redneck if...

I could get another Cummins to sit in my kitchen and put a glass top on it as a kitchen table

We have ordered one off of ebay from the same guy you are talking about. $5400 was the cost but they had us pay $650 for shipping. That would have been fine but it took 2 weeks to ship. For $6500 we can have it the next day so it's a better deal for us.

Have your girlfriend spend the money on a boob job, and get the Cummins coffee table. . Hell, your life would be set then for a long long time. Maybe you cound invite me over afterward to see the coffee table... :D

I have a 2004. 5 Dodge3500 and I lost my engine at 380 miles with #6injectoer stuck open and burned a hole through piston, I had my truck back in a week with new engine installed, no problems with this engine 6000 mile on truck now.

BUTCHJ,

Both of these trucks had the 6 hole fail also. One was missing a part of the piston and the other was just rough. How does your truck run now? Did they replace all of the injectors are just one?

My Truck is running fine with no problems, my replacement engine came in as a complete engine with all accessaries.

cause high elevation(maybe maybe not), heavy trailers, chipped, no gauges, high egts... duh whats that. i am not saying this is the case for everyone but for many this is true. This is a scary situation when buying a used truck.
