How many head bolts?

Gonna have to end up replacing the head gasket. I am starting to find a little oil in my anti freeze. Fortunately though, I'm not finding any antifreeze in my oil. To keep it that way, I'm gonna get it taken care of before it gets any worse.



My question is, "How many head bolts are there?" I'm gonna put all new in but I can't find how many. My factory service manual says 26. My Cummins parts catalog (and the parts guy at Cummins NW) tell me there are 20 (6 short and 14 long). I'm so confused

Hey Carl

I can't help you with the headbolt count but if you need a hand with the job let me know. I'm not too far and I have a good torque wrench. You also might want to consider putting in 60 lb exhaust springs while you're at it. That head is pretty heavy so 4 hands would be better than 2. I'm free almost any Sunday - just let me know.

Thanks Joe. I was just looking and figured it out. I was forgetting about the 6 long ones through the rocker arm assys.

Ya that is one heavy darn head... . I've pinched my little fingers more than once ... .

I used a frontt end loader with a round bale fork, and had a come along attached to that. Put a chain thru the loops on the head, then hooked all together, and ratcheted it up and off. Do a search, there is an abundance of info on the topic.



Checked my book, and 26 bolts. Use the gauge that comes with the Cummins HG kit to see if yours are stretched too much, or if you can get a deal on them, get new ones.

If I'm pulling it off, new bolts are going back in. Last thing I want is to have one break adn have to pull everything back off.
