My 01 with HP + 6speed has been great for over 90,000 miles now. When is my clutch going to go bad on me? I've abused this OEM clutch and it has performed well and still is. I plan to go on a long trip this winter and am concerned if I would be smart to replace it now, rather than on the road if it dies on me?

Any advice to share? Thanks!

Richard

Mine lasted till about 115k miles, soon after turning the power up it started to slip if I accellerated hard with the trailer on. Empty it would slip intermittantly when excellerating. When it was takin apart, we found the throw-out bearing was failing and leaking grease. So I feel that if the bearing had held together, it would have lasted longer. My '91 GM with a 350 was abused on a daily basis and I pulled loads where I would have to rev it up and slip it out in 1st gear. The OEM clutch was holding pretty well still at 170k miles when I traded in for my CTD.

Point is there are too many variables to think about. My recommendation is to put in a good clutch that is rated for more HP than you intend to have and forget about it. ;)

Mine lasted 145K miles. However, when I pulled it out a month ago, it fell out in about 15 pieces! And believe it or not, it wouldn't disengage when I was in Georgia fueling up (driving home from Florida) and I drove the truck home, non stop, to Washington DC like that. I guess the clutch gods were looking over me that day!

I still have my stock clutch at 177,000+ miles in my '99. I have been running a EZ on the truck since about 130,000 miles. Lot's of towting. The clutch still holds good, but there is a squeal when taking off in 2nd under any load... guessing throwout or pilot bearing. May get a '05, so I ain't sweating the clutch. If it goes out, I will replace it (probably a SBC). If you don't have any noise or slippage, I would not worry about it. JMO.
