I have a buddy with a 97 CTD with about 120K miles on it. He is concerned about replacing the brushes and bearings in his altenator. My opinion is leave it alone until it is broken, but he drives out of state quite often. What is a good estimate as to when to expect altenator failure?

152,000 on mine. I just changed belts last week and gave it a spin by hand--it felt like the bearings were still lubed.

I talked to a auto electric guy and he told me 175k easy and maybe 225k+. If mine goes out I am going to have it rebuilt by a very good auto electric shop.

crabman :)

On my '92 I made it to about 180,000 - 190,000 miles before I had a problem. The housing cracked, like a bearing went bad or something. New alt solved the problem. It was still putting out about 9 volts with the cracked housing.

No problems at 174,000+ on my '99. No plans to do anything to it until it causes me to have to make plans. :-laf

223k miles was as far as mine went. Bearings were fine but the brushes and stator were long gone. I went with the lifetime warranty from Autozone. They'll regret it... .

I got 220,000 miles so far on the alt. She is starting to make noise at start up though. Hope to do a rebuild in class.
