Have a 1992 ctd with 160,000 on auto. How many miles can i get out of it? Change the fluid ever other year with redline. Shifts firm.

1992 ctd, 160,000, 2001 ctd HO, powerpack banks, exashust brake 50 gal trans flow. 30 ft forest river fifth:D Oo.

Your doing great! I have 175,000 miles and I'm on my third transmission. Original went out at 87,000 (Before I bought it), the second one went out after I bought it at about 140, 000. The third one seems to be holding up pretty good. Had some mods done when it was rebuilt. Just had it serviced, the pan was clean, no sludge or shavings. Found a problem with the line pressure being almost nil and corrected that. Shifts much better now. Also switched to Amsoil.

Changing the fluid like you have really helps. It will be tough to predict how far you can go but with new fluid every other year you could get another couple of hundred thousand miles out of it(or it could fail tomorrow! ) If it seems to be ok and you don't get it hot should be ok. The big fiver could be an issue with hot oil but the redline won't break down like conventional oil will.

This is a tough question to get an answer to.

Oh, by the way - have you had the truck on a Dyno yet? that 2001 motor could cause some trouble if the HP is very high. The OD section was what failed on mine the last time and then pumped crap through the transmission.

My last truck made it to 202,000, at about 190,000 started to hear a whine out of the rear of the trans, then one day it it just died. My current truck has 230,000. It had one owner before me and I have all his receipts and see no trans job. Not sure if its original. Karl

I had mine rebuilt (performance upgraded) at 150,000mi. The fluid had been changed 4 times since new. The shop that did the rebuild said the transmission was in excellent condition for the age. The only parts that I changed that were not part of the upgrade kit was the output shaft and the OD rear bearing. The shaft had a small grove from a skewed seal and the OD bearing was preventative maintenance. I would guess I could have gone another 150k or more. I think a large factor is I do not tow anything really heavy and most of the miles are "easy" miles.

202K on the original auto. Serviced every 12K since 145K. The previous owner didn't do much of anything. I run Dextron III and get filters at NAPA. I pull up to 14-16K with it.

230K+ on Mom's

I bought it (137K) from a guy that towed a 25 ft or so 5'er. At least that's what the dealer said. I towed with it for 25K before selling it to my mom. Never had a guage on it, never had any real problems. TC seems to be getting a little soft; seems to take more pedal to get moving than when I had it. I have been driving it this week while I work 40 hrs in 3. 5 days, and get my pickup back together (head gasket). I think she needs to get a lower stall TC, but then again, they ALL could use one. I'm used to my clutch that takes off differently. Put a guage set on it- pyro, boost, tach, trans temp. Watch your temps, and the tach. If the tach starts to move more when you push theh go pedal (that "surge" before you move) than "normal" it could indicate a problem. someone more up on this needs to go into more detail.

220k on mine

Have 220k on mine - not rebuilt (that I know of). New TCI converter made BIG difference, fluid changes often. Not new, but not dead yet. Will drive it until it grenades.

great transmission

When i bought my 01 i made sure it was a6speed;) I can`t complain about the auto. transmission temps never went above 180 in pan pulling 30 ft fifth, the water temp started to get hot, and i needed a exhast break so i could stop the beast. I love my 92 ctd, but they have come a long way in 10 yrs in comfort. I use my 92 ctd as a work truck and my 01 for travling and pulling the 5th. :D
